For example if a character has magical knack (magus) and does independant research to learn a bard spell (say cure light wounds), would the +2 caster level trait bonus apply to the researched spell?

Or does magical knack only work with spells specific to the profession's list?

anything that uses the Caster Level is affected. Your CL is higher, therefore anything that use CL will use your higher CL.
