Blocking Weapons and Shield Enhancement Bonus

Rules Questions

Lantern Lodge

I seriously doubt that in RAW or RAI you are allowed to put a shield enhancement bonus on blocking weapons, but the situation is similar to putting a weapon enhancement bonus on a shield except that shields are on weapon tables, but blocking weapons aren't on shield tables.

"Blocking: When you use this weapon to fight defensively, you gain a +1 shield bonus to AC."

Blocking.

If it was allowable it would only work while fighting defensively.

I believe this is doubtful, but possible, what do you think?

Two-Weapon Defense (Combat)

Benefit: When wielding a double weapon or two weapons (not including natural weapons or unarmed strikes), you gain a +1 shield bonus to your AC.

But you can't give this feat shield enhancements, now can you? Just because it's giving a shield bonus, doesn't make it a shield.

Short answer...no. A shield is both armor and weapon...at least for the light and heavy shields. A blocking weapon is still just a weapon.

First of all, thanks for the quick responses! Secondly, I'm not trying to sound snarky below, I'm just writing my opinions without malice or anything.

A) I wasn't talking about Two-Weapon Defense and B) I never said you could. I just said it was unlikely, at the beginning and at the end, but possible. In PFS I wouldn't allow it as a GM because of what I just said, but in a home game, I might.

How about I re-phrase this? Do you think this would be broken in a home game? What do you think about allowing a player to do this?

And, I already pointed out that a shield is on both the shield and weapon tables, that's why it's doubtful that you could do this in a legal by the rules manner. Hmm, now that I look at it, perhaps the Rulese Questions thread was the wrong place for my ramblings here, but I blame being tired...yeah that's it.

It also works just fine to put defending on the blocking weapon and use it that way. The shield and weapon enhancement bonuses might be more flavor than anything really.

Oops, somehow i didn't see that you responded. I doubt you still care, but might as well try to answer your questions just in case.

I know you weren't talking about two-weapon defense. I brought it up to make a point. Your weapon gives you a shield bonus. TWD gives you a shield bonus. Obviously neither are shields. As such, you can not give either one of them shield enhancements.

As far as balancing goes, I'm not sure how you would figure the costs. If you had a tonfa with +2 weapon enhancements and +2 shield enhancements, would it cost 12000 (8000 for the +2 weapon enhancement, 4000 for the +2 shield enhancement)? 16000 (8000 for the weapon enhancement, and another 8000 for the shield enhancement since it's on a weapon)? 32000 (altogether it's a +4 enhancement on a weapon)? I would say just get defending as it's already something that does pretty much exactly what you want it to do.

It specifically says that you can use this weapon defensively like a buckler. With that in mind, it seems totally legit that you could enchant it as you would a shield. I would apply the same rule to any weapon with the blocking quality. It's just that you would only get the enhancement bonus tacked on to your shield bonus if you were fighting defensively. Even then, the weapon would not be treated as a magic weapon for purposes of DR, etc. unless you then also enchanted it as a weapon.

It's odd conceptually, but it makes some sense to me. There's historical precedent for similar use of weapons when held in the off-hand, such as dual wielding with a rapier and main gauche.
