Basic mirror image question

Was chatting with a player and realized we disagreed on this spell.

Quote:
When mirror image is cast, 1d4 images plus one image per three caster levels (maximum eight images total) are created.

Our disconnect came on when the +1 started kicking in. I read it as you get 1d4 images at first through third, then start getting the +1. He read it as getting 1d4+1 at first through third before adding in more.

Thoughts?

You get 1d4+1 at 3rd, 1d4+2 at 6th, and so on.

You get 1d4, then another one per 3 CLs. Divide your CL by 3 and add that many. If you're CL 3, that's 1d4+1. If you're CL 9, that's 1d4+3, etc.

Silver Crusade

Divide CL by three and round down.

As a 2nd lvl spell your minimum CL is 3rd, so as soon as you can cast it you'll get 1d4+1 images.
