So...if it turns out to be a bit of the rover that has dropped off...
What might be the consequences? Who might get the blame for faulty construction?
Or. What caused the piece to come off? Meteorite strike? Other possibilities?
Not necessarily the rover itself, but part of the sky crane, or the aeroshell assembly.

Yeah. Not all of the rover was designed to survive entry.

There are lots of bits and pieces that came off of the shell during entry...BY DESIGN. In fact the aeroshell was even shooting slugs out as part of it's orientation. also lots of explosive bolts are part of what makes things like heat shield separation possible.
