Really depends on what kind of wizard you are playing, I really like fast study because you get so much versatility. If you are a blaster wizard you should get Dazing spell. But look at metamagic feat section in Professor Q's wizard guide it is quite good IMO.

Fast Study or Dazing spell, even though you can't use dazing spell until level 7 or later.
My top mm feat choices are dazing and quicken. Persistent is also good, though I prefer a lesser rod for that (with Slow or Glitterdust).
Fast Study is more because of the organised play format and immediacy of many missions; though in practice I think it is useful less than 50% of the time.

If you like save-or-sucks or save-dependant battlefield control, persistant spell is great to make those hard saves so much harder. At 5th level you will lose a lot of potential effect though, as 1st level save or suck spells are much more limited in power than 3rd level. At 7th it starts to get really good.
If you like buffing or summoning, extend is worth considering. The lesser rod isn't that expensive, but it's a metamagic you'll use throughout your career and you can begin using it instantly as there are quite a few good 2nd level spells to put it on. Especially if you're a generalist.

I agree with both Fast Study and Persistent spell being great.. I have personal fondness for Reach Spell, but that depends a lot on your play style/ typical spells you use.
I would never get Dazing Spell at level 5 though, because it would be a completely useless feat until 2 levels later. (unless you had Magical Lineage for a first level spell or something)
Definitely one of my first choices for level 7 though.
