The Tattooed Mystic

Advice

Hi!

I'm currently gearing up to play a Sage bloodline tiefling sorcerer for Rise of the Runelords who has a great interest in the magic of ancient Thassilon and I really like the flavor of the Tattood Mystic PrC from Paths of Prestige but I'm wondering how I can build a sorcerer that can go the distance in that campaign when I'll be losing 3 spellcasting levels. Has anyone seen anything with the PrC that, besides the really cool flavor, makes it worth taking for someone who is already a sorcerer? Jumping to wizard is a possibility, but not my favorite one.

We're currently packing a gunslingin' paladin and a beast totem barb, possibly also a rogue at this point, so I'm carrying the arcane burden.

Are there any worthwhile "tricks" to pull off with the mystic tattoos gained from the PrC or am I just better off taking the tattooed sorcerer archetype and going with that flavor?

Liberty's Edge

Flickering Eye is really nice for an illusionist. Like, ridiculously nice. Like, absolutely worth 3 lost caster levels nice. You essentially get a free spell without a spell slot while you're concentrating (aka, when you're defenseless).

Rune of Fangs is also good, especially if the enhancement bonus granted gives you the ability to overcome damage reduction. Amulet of mighty fists is a really expensive item. Getting it for free helps a lot.

Binding Trine is interesting, and can work if you're in a campaign with lots of other spellcasters.

Basically, though, you need more varied tattoos if you want this to work out. Maybe try and homebrew some, and ask your DM to allow them.

Let's see...for example:

Entrancing Smile: This potent tattoo allows the user to partially affect a creature who has managed to throw off his enchantment effects. When a creature successfully saves against a WillNegates spell up to 3rd level that the tattooed mystic has cast with the (Charm) subschool, the tattooed mystic may make a Diplomacy check (DC equal to the DC to improve the creature's attitude) with a +5 bonus as an immediate action. If the check succeeds, the creature's attitude towards the mystic increases by two categories instead of one. This ability does not work against creatures who are immune to mind-affecting abilities. Each time this tattoo is selected after the first, the maximum spell level it affects increases by 2, up to 9th level.

If your DM doesn't mind homebrew, check our my tattooed mystic, an alternate monk class.

If you are using the rules from Inner Sea Magic for Arcane schools, you could become a guild member and get Eclectic and Esoteric training in Sorceror, to get your caster levels back.

As yet I understand this has not been errata'ed. A partial discussion of whether this is broken as hell, is here:

Wow. That Eclectic Training would kill off all the drawbacks of the PrC. I did see some of the abilities as being pretty good but I was debating whether it was "-3 spellcasting levels" good.

The campaign is Rise of the Runelords (10th Anniversary Ed) so I'm given to understand that evil wizards start crawling out of the walls as the campaign progresses.

@MasterArminas: When I was doing a search earlier on the tattooed mystic PrC, that's the first thing that came up. It's cool but he's our parties arcane caster and my first run at one in about 5 years. I think my fellow players would explode if I went melee yet again.
