Wings (Ex)- The alchemist gains bat-like, bird-like, or insect-like functional wings, allowing him to fly as the fly spell for a number of minutes per day equal to his caster level. These minutes do not need to be consecutive, but they must be spent in 1-minute increments.
simple question really- do these wings require any 'action' to activate? (I"m assuming they are a free action, but just wanted to make sure)

Without any explicit mentioning of the action type, the default usually is standard action.

In general if it's not specified, most things are a standard action. There are exceptions though.
Extraordinary Abilities Using an extraordinary ability is usually not an action because most extraordinary abilities automatically happen in a reactive fashion. Those extraordinary abilities that are actions are usually standard actions that cannot be disrupted, do not require concentration, and do not provoke attacks of opportunity.
The wings are out. As far as I can tell there is no "activating" them. You just fly. You are limited to 1 minute/ level flight per day though.

I would also have thought that the wings are out all of the time, but the 1/min thing made me reconsider. It could just be wings that you have to "stretch out", "fold out" or whatever. You really think you have those wings hanging around you all the time but can't use them all of the time? I don't think so... :-/
