Paladin Advice Needed

Advice

Scarab Sages

My current group needed both a frontline fighter and someone capable of healing to round out it's lineup, so I've rolled up a paladin. As this isn't my usual preference for a character, I'm not entirely familar with optimising the design and would like any tips or pointers for the character.

I've selected a build using Sword and Shield as I need every AC point I could lay my hands on.

Other than that, selected the Hospitaler archtype to allow me to both self heal, and still have channel attempts for group stablisation. Wand of Cure Light wounds serves as my main "after fight" pick me up.

OK, my comments:

Sword & board looks good, but why is the shield only masterwork when it's only 1000gp to make it +1?
Try and get a stat-booster to Dex ASAP to take Improved TWF, failing that your next feat is Double Slice.
Why a -1 to perception? That should be a primary skill for EVERY character.

Go Paladin of vengece for extra smiting drop twf sword board idea get one really big reach weapon and some wands to patch everyone up after you kill things. Feats power attack, combat reflexs, stand still, ans extra loh for more smiting. Kill it quick there wont be much damage to heal :).

My advice, play and angel blood aassimar over human, trade your daylight for +2 dex, so u end up with a +2 str, dex, cha race.
Forget about hospitaler and go oath of vengence instead.. From experience its usually better to attack and try to kill somthing over combat heals and OoV pallies get alot of smites per day...

Stat wise i would go:

str 15 +2race, +1bump 4th = 18
dex 13 +2race, +2belt = 17
con 14
int 10
wis 10
cha 14 +2race = 16

Feats:

1st TWF
3rd Double slice
5th Imp. Shield Bash

7th Imp. TWF

Gear:

+1 scimitar (2k)
+1 bashing med shield (4k)
+1 fullplate (2.5k)
+2 dex belt (4k)
+1 cloak resistance (1k)
wand of cure light wounds

1750k left to spend on whatever

This gets u a 24ac 10 armor, 1 dex, 3 shield and a 27 ac while smiting..
Attack bonuses are instead

+9/+4 1d6+5 and
+9 1d8+4

+12/+7 1d6+11 smite
+12 1d8+11

You have 6 lohs for self heals or extra smites and a wand for out combat heals

Sadly with my GM, trying to out-damage fights can be tricky, as hitpoints on the enemies seems to fluctuate (generally bad admin rather than outright cheating), hence the need for some on the spot healing.

With regards to perception, as important as it is in the game, I'm of the mindset if it's not a class skill, don't bother with points in it.

Shield is +1, shows as masterworked under the bash as I made the shield spikes masterworked for more damage. However, can drop the masterwork for the bashing enchant, though it does mean giving up the adamantite longsword, which I thought was kinda cool for a paladin to have.

"trade your daylight for +2 dex"

wait, you can do that? how?

Well you chose the best damage dealer for a paladin build short of an archer.

That's not a good mindset to have, as many espouse that Perception SHOULD be a class skill for everyone...

Ah, gotcha. Stick with the sword, just enhance up the shield and take Bashing (it does stack with shield spikes BTW) and Shield Master at 11th level.

This is technically legal. The way it's written is you're supposed to roll randomly.

This only works at lower level. If you plan on playing over level 8 you absolutely need a combat healer.

I wouldn't worry about optimizing a paladin all that much. You smites are going to go a long way to making your DPR shoot up. We have a straight sword and board (non-two-weapon fighting) paladin in our 12th level game. If we fight something evil we all pray our init is higher than the Paladin's or we won't even get an attack in, and I play a Zen Archer.
