Multi-classing

Rules Questions

So I have finally made my way into Pathfinder originating from DnD 3.5 and there are some things that are similar and things that are different. so before I jumped in head first into my first "campaign" or "mod" I wanted to make sure I was going to be able to play correctly. So I did what we all have done and read the core rulebook. I decided I was going to play a Half-Elf then proceeded to finish the creation of Maeglin. in case some people don't know Half-Elves have a racial trait called "multitalented" which states:

"Half-Elves choose two FAVORED CLASSES at first level and gain +1 hit point or +1 skill point when ever they take a level in either one of those classes."

so thought well two classes lets become a ranger/rouge so I am in my session and the GM (which I believe is Pathfinders version of DM) knows me to be a ranger. in the middle of the campaign I find an opportunity to utilize one of my rouge skills.

This is where the GM points out to me that "I am not a rouge" confused I point out the multi-talented tid-bit and he/she repeats him/herself stating that I am only a ranger.

It wasn't fully explained to me why I was only a Ranger so I have come here for advice.

Do you have levels in both the Ranger and the Rogue class?
If you don't, you are just a single classed Ranger.

The 'two favored classes' thing just means you get the extra goodie (usually +1hp or +1 skill point) for taking a level of your favorite class whenever you take a level in Ranger or Rogue.

Oh, and btw: Does your Ranger wear makeup, or why do you intend to use rouge skills?

Actually my Ranger did wear make-up he had to look pretty for a ball he was invited to. but the real purpose at the time was for linguistics. I am greatful for you pointing this out to me

Midnight has it right. In order to be multiclassed, you need to actually take one level in more than one class. Which in turn means you need to be at least level 2.

All characters in PFS have a favored class that is chosen at first level. for most people (not all) it will be their first class level. Every time that character levels up and takes a level in that class, they get a favored class bonus, which as Midnight pointed out, is usually +1 hit point or +1 skill point.

Half-elves get to declare 2 classes as their favored class. So if you picked ranger and rogue, every time you took a level of ranger OR rogue, you would get the extra bonus. So for example, your levels could be:

Level 1: Ranger 1
Level 2: Ranger 1/Rogue 1
Level 3: Ranger 2/Rogue 1
Level 4: Ranger 3/Rogue 1
etc...

But if at level 5 you chose to do this:
Level 5: Ranger 3/Rogue 1/Barbarian 1

Then you would not get the extra bonus hp or skill.

Liberty's Edge

Please excuse me as I change the subject, but speaking of Muli-Classing, I have a queston about a character that I would not mind getting some input from more experienced players. I am toying with making a combination Samurai and Shadow Dancer class that is will either be Sczarni or Shadow Lodge.

Any thoughts or suggestions?
