Dervish Dance + Martial Versatility?

Rules Questions

1 person marked this as FAQ candidate.

Dervish Dance:
Benefit: When wielding a scimitar with one hand, you can use your Dexterity modifier instead of your Strength modifier on melee attack and damage rolls. You treat the scimitar as a one-handed piercing weapon for all feats and class abilities that require such a weapon (such as a duelist’s precise strike ability). The scimitar must be for a creature of your size. You cannot use this feat if you are carrying a weapon or shield in your off hand.

Martial Versatility:
Benefit: Choose one combat feat you know that applies to a specific weapon (e.g., Weapon Focus). You can use that feat with any weapon within the same weapon group.

So.. I realize this may not be intended to be used this way, but could you for instance use Martial Versatility to use Dervish Dance with other weapons, like a katana, bastard sword, or temple sword (monk)? It is a Combat feat, it applies to a specific weapon, and the wording is open enough that it doesn't specify the feat needs the option to apply more than one weapon.

Seems to me it works. At least in the wording it "should" work. So as long as there has been no errata/FAQ that has broken it regardless of RAW then yes.

Was this not already discussed somewhere?

I believe it would work. It MIGHT be a fair trade-off too considering you have to be a 4th level fighter, human, and spend 3 feats to do this, when the Agile weapon enhancement and Weapon Finesse may be cheaper... Then again, fighter (what with their 21 feats, 22 for humans.)

I believe Dervish Dance fits in with what Martial Versatility is requiring.

How many one-handed heavy blades are there exactly anyways?

Even if it works, it would appear to be of limited use.

I'd pick the falcata just the same.

Blades, Heavy: Aldori dueling sword, bastard sword, chakram, double chicken saber, double walking stick katana, elven curve blade, falcata, falchion, flambard, greatsword, great terbutje , katana, khopesh, klar, longsword, nine-ring broadsword, nodachi, scimitar, scythe, seven-branched sword, shotel, temple sword, terbutje, and two-bladed sword.

I believe that's the full list, It actually seems like a very useful combo.

EDIT: On review, there are 2 handed weapons there, but still, the one handed ones in there allow for interesting combo's. Aldori Duelling sword for instance?

I counted about 24.

If you focus on it, it's hardly limited. There's the damaging greatsword, then the mentioned deadly falcata with a heavy shield for AC. As the feat, it is versatile.

But, really: Dex to hit and damage for Falcata. Considering it's (apparently) a lot easier to dump strength (well, at least 13) than dex for optimizers (or whatever)... Yikes.

EDIT: I just forgot. Dervish Dance REQUIRES you to have one hand empty, so... May actually seriously change things (reduces the blades, heavy list down a bit.)

You still can't use the feat with two-handed weapons or with a shield or second weapon in your offhand.

I as DM has been houseruling Dervish Dance to be useful not only with Scimitar but also with blades like Short Sword or Rapier and has been working well. Between the need of two feats and the only one hand the damage seems balanced. But we have seen that build with Bard, Inquisitor and Magus. No idea how that could work for Fighter.

I swear this was discussed before, and there was even a Dev comment thrown in somewhere.

There was BBT. Don't recall how it was ruled upon though.

You're probably thinking of this thread. Or perhaps the thread quoted within it.

BBT was probably thinking of this thread where the author explained the feats.

Specifically this post is relevant.

So I take it that MV/MM aren't intended to allow using Dervish Dance with any 1-handable Heavy Blade?
That is correct.

@Jodokai: He was asking to see if anyone had the link handy.

Dawnflower dervish gets it for free and with the inpire courage perform you don't miss out on the BAB. You also get some good skills and +2 to will and reflex for a one level dip. You can still use a buckler and you only lose 1 ac over the heavy shield.

I know, I was just teasing. The way the question is worded, a "yes" response doesn't do what you would think it would do:

Q: Did we not discuss this?
A: Yes we did not discuss this

Again sorry, back to the thread.

Clever girl.

Nope, Dervish Dance doesn't apply to "a specific weapon" - it's always a scimitar.

If you could get Dervish Dance (Scimitar) and Dervish Dance (Kukri) etc. then yes. But you can't. So, no.

That's my thought on the matter as well.

Well, this is cleared up. Again.
