Heirloom Weapon question

Rules Questions

So the Heirloom Weapon trait uses the words "that specific weapon" for every possible use of the trait.

So, just to be clear, does that mean if I wanted to take HW (for any of the uses)with an Urumi, does the weapon prof I get only work with that specific non-masterwork urumi that "comes with" the Character Trait (ignoring the fact that you still have to pay for the weapon), and not every urumi?

I ask because the Character Trait specifically says the weapon you have is non-masterwork. So if these things only work with that specific weapon, and not every version of that weapon, then it's a worthless trait, because you will never be able to upgrade/enchant it.

(Edit - So replace "urumi" with any simple/martial weapon, since you can't use HW with an exotic weapon.)

Yes, it means only your starting Urumi.

That's why the masterwork transformation spell exists.

Note that this trait has been errata'd, download and check out the Adventurer's Armory Errata

AA Errata:
Page 30—Replace the Heirloom Weapon entry with the following text: “Heirloom Weapon: You carry a non-masterwork simple or martial weapon that has been passed down from generation to generation in your family (pay the standard gp cost for the weapon). When you select this trait, choose one of the following benef its: prof iciency with that specif ic weapon, a +1 trait bonus on attacks of opportunity with that specif ic weapon, or a +2 trait bonus on one kind of combat maneuver when
using that specif ic weapon.”

Edit: Linkified

You're mostly right. It's near useless.

For the first few levels, the trait emulates a simple or martial masterwork weapon. When you get enough loot to make a masterwork, or find one, most of the benefit is gone. By the time you find your first +1, the benefit is long gone.

I no longer like the flavor either. You have to BUY your own ancestral weapon? Your relatives bequeathed it to you... but only for the low low price of... market value?

If your dm allows Rich Parents, take that and buy a masterwork urumi and blow a feat as necessary. It can be with you your whole career.

...Even with masterwork transformation... its still pretty mediocre.

Until you have said Heirloom Weapon Enchanted,it may not be an optimized choice but not everything has to be. The Dhampir rogue we have in our group has taken her heirloom scimitar got master work transformation, then got it enchanted as a +1 frost Scimitar that givers her an additional +1 for disarm.

She like the idea of advancing her Scimitar during play.

While listening to the Gen Con Podcasts, it was briefly mentioned in the Mythic Rules discussions (I think it was the RPG Designer's panel) that the Mythic book would have rules for legacy weapons. Too bad we need to wait until next summer, but something to keep in mind.

Idk it looks nice to me if you want an exotic weapon for half the cost and if you want to do maneuvers with said weapon, well then bonus or perhaps you are making a CaGM Barbarian then that +1 to AoO is pretty sweet. It is situational, but for the right character I'd pick it up with no regrets.

About the having to buy it, your starting wealth isn't what you grab when you decide that this adventuring thing sounds neat and you might as well give it a whirl. It is your characters possessions that he has obtained in the course of his life when an adventure happens upon him.
