Demons

Rules Questions

I have two questions about demons related to the Bestiary. When a demon has the "summon" ability what does the level mean beside the spell-like ability? For example:

1/day - summon(level 3, 1 babau at 40%)

What does level 3 mean?

Also, in v.3.5 there was a book about Demons that discussed demonic possession. It had a rule that demons with the ability to possess a PC (or anything else for that matter) should be considered to be at a CR +2 higher than a normal demon. Are the demons in the Bestiary considered to have this ability or not and if a GM added possession to a demon's abilities should a +2 be added to its CR?

Thanks!

3.5e is not as compatible with Pathfinder as you might think.
However, I would add the +2 CR for such demons, because they are a pain in the backside.

Also, can you even try Dispel Magic on spell-like abilities?
If not, then the number on the Summon (which I assume is Caster Level) is more or less meaningless.

It's spell level of the summoning effect. You can dispel spell-like abilities, just like a spell. You can also disrupt them by forcing concentration checks by damage.

PF fixed some CR issues, and I'd treat them as the CR given. As this is the PFS subforum, you can't add abilities to monsters. If you're talking in general as part of a home game, I haven't heard of that swap out, but the Book of the Damned has some info on possessions IIRC.

Others have addressed the question of the level listing, so I just wanted to pop in and emphasize what Sniggevert said:

As part of Pathfinder Society, you're playing Pathfinder not 3.5. The only legal resources are those listed in the Guide and Additional Resources. Demons have the abilities listed for them in the Bestiaries and no others, unless the scenario specifically lists something out of the ordinary.

If your question is about Pathfinder in general rather than Pathfinder Society specifically, then you should probably post over in the Rules Questions section of the boards.

"An appropriate spell level is given for each summoning ability for purposes of Will saves, caster level checks, and concentration checks. No experience points are awarded for defeating summoned monsters."
