Is there a mis-typing in High Lady Athroxys (RotR Annyversary ed.)

Rise of the Runelords

Her weapon is listed as a +1 flaming ranseur in the Gear section and as a +3 flaming ranseur in the Melee section.
I can guess the right one is the +3 version looking at her CR of 15, but maybe i'm missing something?

Before Combat Athroxis casts greater magic weapon and keen edge on her ranseur daily, and false life on herself. When she sees the PCs reach area K3, she casts fly and mirror image on herself as well.

I just came to look up the same question. I missed that Greater Magic Weapon was making it +3.

However, that still doesn't explain why she'd cast Keen Edge on a weapon for which she has the Improved Critical feat. The Keen Edge spell even specifically says "Multiple effects that increase a weapon's threat range (such as the keen special weapon property and the Improved Critical feat) don't stack."

I'm thinking I should trade out either that spell or that feat for her. I could give her Furious Focus, so she can use Power Attack and still hit on the first shot more easily against my party front liners with AC's in the mid-30s. Or to keep it simple and be nice, I could just give her a backup Haste instead of the spell, in case the party retreats and comes back for a second attack.

I'd suggest trade out the feat and leave the spell. That'll give her a bit more versatility in combat with a different feat. Furious Focus is a good.

Also make sure you get some mileage out of her Project Image spell. My party thought the image in the back of the room was the real her as she was casting spells, and she actually ran around to the rear of the party to attack their casters/healer. They were a bit surprised when the real Athroxys started furious focus'ing on the healer with their main fighter dealing with the glabrezu.

I also allowed the glabrezu to successfully use his summon ability prior to combat to get the vrocks. Those summoned vrocks last 1 hour so no reason to wait until the start of combat.

So going off topic here, but my party captured her alive, and I'm trying to decide how she'd react to them. They knocked her down to -9 HP and then stabilized her, took her stuff, and tied her up. That's where we left off last session.

They're planning to tell her they're enemies of Karzoug, in the hopes of getting her to help them. I haven't decided yet if that should work. Actually, it doesn't matter that much if it does. She can give them some background info on the areas in Runeforge, but she doesn't know enough to be useful in helping them get a dominant weapon.

She has some stilled spells left, but I have to see which of those can be cast without a spell component pouch to see if she'll have any chance of fighting back. I really wish she could use her fireball strategy to self destruct, but that still requires material components.

I would think that she would remain hostile to the party (unless a successful Diplomacy check). These are "outsiders" not aligned with Runelord Alaznist, invaders into her realm that she has reign over. She would grudgingly provide information, but only what she knows (destruction of the abjuration wing she lead the charge on, training her soldiers for her Runelord's return, how her initiates are changed from humans to sin-spawn to keep the cycle of recruits, etc.)

Trading out her keen edge spell for something else and keeping Improved Crit as a feat is a good way to address that error (that's a 3.5ism that we didn't catch and correct) if you want to keep her from getting too complex in play. Going the other way around and giving her a different feat works too, of course, but having to keep track of the new options a new combat feat grants her makes her that much more complex to run, so I'd avoid that if you're not comfortable juggling that much more rules in play.

But either solution works.

Heh. Just checked over her spell list. Even tied up without a spell component pouch, she still has 5 spells left that she can cast using just verbal components, and they're all directly offensive (Blindness/Deafness and 4 stilled Magic Missiles, 2 of which are empowered).

I think if she's gagged when they heal her up to consciousness, I'll let them try to talk her down from hostile. If she's not gagged, or they mess up the diplomacy check, she'll blast them with everything she's got left.

Kinda glad I didn't have your dilemma when my party encountered her. They sent her to another dimension via prismatic spray. Thinking of having her return to say HI when they encounter Karzoug... "What do you know, the 'other dimension' Anthroxys got sent to..." MUHAHAHA!!!

How much damage did the pc's do to the rest of the Halls of Wrath? Are there any other survivors? How much does she know about that? If she survives, she's the High Lady of what? Nothing? With no chance to rebuild?

My suggestion: she plays along and betrays them at the moment of maximum impact. For hate's sake, I spit my last breath at thee.

She's been the ruler of an isolated domain for what? hundreds of years? Some non-thassilonian interlopers break in and kill everyone she's ever known and start rambling about Karzoug, some Runelord she's never met and want her to join up so they can loot the rest of her home to deal with him? Yea, right. I'm thinking her primary motivation is vengeance.

My players bypassed some Warriors of Wrath, and Dominated another. When the party wizard got the killing blow on the Highlady, he also got the mark of wrath and instantly got a posse of militant magi (as I made them).

Silver Crusade

My party killed them all. I figure the Highlady will be too pissed off to talk to them, unless they make a pretty extreme diplomacy check, which is unlikely. I'll probably just have her try to blind someone immediately, when they wake her up, then follow up with a magic missile if they let her live that long.
