Rules Questions

So we were fighting a Bebilith. My Monk was killed and later was brought back. I know the rules and he "lost" two levels. In the Negative Levels section of the core Rules book it lists what happens for negative levels, but I am wondering if that is the complete list.

My monk went from 8th to 6th. He lost a stat point, he lost a Feat, he lost KI points. He lost a lot of other things that are not on that list.

Do I take that list literally and he keeps all of his other abilities? For example, He has an 8th level Flurry of 6/6/1/1. If he goes down to Sixth level that would be 4/4/-1.

No, you don't unbuild your character. You just take the penalties that negative levels explicitly give. You've still got the stat point and the feat. You lose the Ki because it's a level dependent variable. Same for the slow fall distance and the unarmed damage die increase. I think you keep Wholeness of Body.

They had a raise dead available but no Restoration spell?

Negative levels don't erase the levels you've gained.
If your Monk was level 8, he doesn't become level 6 - He becomes level 8 with a 2 negative level penalty.

Here are the specific descriptions of Energy Drain and Negative Levels:

As for Monks, your Unarmed Strike damage, your AC bonus, and your Ki Points are all treated as if you were two levels lower. But you don't lose feats, or perm. ability score adjustments, etc.

A Paladin with 20 charisma can get Ultimate Mercy at level 7 if they take Extra Lay on Hands but can't cast Restoration until level 13 so it's possible.

No, wait, Ultimate Mercy only gives one negative level and it's not permanent.

So yeah, how did you manage to get raise dead but no restoration?

Actually, I think Ultimate Mercy gives the PALADIN a negative level if she chooses to raise dead without the diamond reagent. I believe the raised player still takes 2 negative levels as the spell.

The game has us in a War Zone. There are limited spells available. They have some raise dead spells. We are not in an area where we can just run off to a temple and get the restoration. Plus as has been said in another thread, I think we blew all our gold on the raise dead.

One other thing that has gotten me confused. Ever time I read these Raise Dead threads, Restoration is used once, and yet, when I have read the Core Rules it states "This spell cannot be
used to dispel more than one permanent negative level possessed
by a target in a 1-week period."

Just in case, I have looked up Restoration on here and it states the same thing.

Silver Crusade

Ah, ok.

Well, it's one of those things where normally, by the time that the party has access to Raise Dead, Negative Levels are just an inconvenience. The divine casters can just memorize as many restorations as needed to get rid of the negative levels.

To be honest, when you have Raise Dead, death is more an nuisance than a real problem, unless the fight is gonna be a TPK or the cleric is killed.
