Putting points in the fly skill...when?

Rules Questions

I was told a character can not put points in the fly skill until they actually have the ability (or item/power/etc)to fly.

Is this accurate?

Yes.

pg 96 of the crb

You cannot take ranks in this skill without a natural
means of flight or gliding.

You cannot take ranks in this skill without a natural or magical
means of flight or gliding.

Fixed that for you.

What about the fly spell? Or boots of flying? Or fly potions? None of those are natural means of flying and all require use of the fly skill for any maneuvers.

If you use a potion of flying at level 2 can you start putting points into flying at level 3 even if you don't get a fly spell for 2 more levels?

Greatly appreciated. Is that from the most recent printing? If so, I need to update my copy.

Reliable means of practising flight. Daily use of a fly spell or magic item is acceptable.

You left out the following sentence (perhaps because it falls on the following page).

So to answer lochmonster; the boots would work fine, you'd need a potion of fly EVERY DAY, the fly spell would work fine IF you dedicated a spell slot for it every day. My prepared casters tend to leave a spell slot open and if I hadn't used it for anything else, then I practice flying before bed.

Its actually what Lazarx said, but I felt "or magical" was sufficient. ;-)

Of course once you spent a few days practicing flying and took a skill rank you wouldnt lose that rank just because you didn't drink a potion of fly (or prepare the spell, or whatever).

Bummer. My samurai's companion horse took a rank in fly - which apparently she can't do now. Guess there's nothing to do but use her next ability score increase to up her INT to 3 and start dumping ranks into craft.

Samurai: Horse! Is my new lance ready yet? You said it would be done two weeks ago!
Horse: Neigh.

Well, when you have egg on your face, make breakfast :D

The assumption is that you're doing this on your down time. IF it involves an expendable resource, it's up to the GM to decide how many expenditures you need to make before you've practised for that skill rank.
