Linguistics

Rules Questions

A character with a 16 Intelligence gains 3 bonus languages at character creation.

Later, the character invests 6 ranks in linguistics.

Does the character gain 9 additional languages? Or, just 6?

Thank you.

9. Ranks count and bonus languages from intelligence count. That's pretty much it.

He started out with 3 bonus languages and picked up an additional language beyond that each time he took a rank in Linguistics, for a total of 9 additional languages. Note that only the first 3 languages are limited to the racial bonus language list -- the 6 picked up from his Linguistics skill can be any languages at all.

OK. Just wanted to make sure the rules' intention concerning whether or not he get double his Int mod in number of langages when he gained the linquistics skill.

I could have seen this being ruled either way, but just wanted to make sure.

Where are you coming up with double Int mod?

You get your Int bonus in bonus languages selected from your racial list even if you have no ranks in Linguistics.

You also get one extra language (free choice, not limited to racial list) per rank in Linguistics, not per point of Linguistics bonus. If you are actually 6th level or higher and put 6 ranks into the Linguistics, skill, then you have those 6 extra languages even if you have an intelligence penalty that would reduce your bonus below +6. However, if you are only 1st level with an intelligence of 16 and Linguistics as a class skill and you have one rank in Linguistics for a total bonus of +7, you have only one extra language from that Linguistics rank.

I was thinking that it could possibly be based off of total Linguistics bonus and that the bonus languages from high intelligence could be considered separately since you don't benefit from the actual linguistics skill if you are untrained.

But, since the number of languages is based off of the actual ranks, not the final bonus, the question is resolved.

You get your Int bonus in bonus languages at level 1.

You get one additional language for every rank in linguistics. This is not increased by your Int modifier. Your total modifier in Linguistics (for Forgery and deciphering languages) uses your Int bonus, but your number of languages gained is based on your ranks in linguistics, not your Linguistics modifier.

Therefore, your character will have 3 bonus languages chosen from his racial bonus languages list, and 6 additional languages from Linguistics, which can be any non-secret language, for a total of 9 languages (plus any automatic racial language).

EDIT: Missed your last post, guess that was already cleared up.
