Rise of the Runelords Path - Required Miniatures

Miniatures

How many miniatures do I want to play the adventure path?

I got my cases and allot of RotRL miniatures. They are of course excellent but .. I have yet to DM or played RotRL so I do not know what I need. I also have Heros and Monsters.

Let's assume I want to get four of each Common, 2 of each UC and 1 of each Rare for both RotRL and H&M. In the adventure path, what will I need extras of to depict a battle? Lets ignore figures not in the sets. So if I need a bunch of Gnolls, no need to discuss.

As some examples, if I need about six Ogrekin in a single battle, I would want 1.5 times the usual Common allotment. (4 Commons x 1.5). Between H&M and RotRL I should have about 24 foot-goblins (6 Commons x 4). Do I want 1.25 times because I should have 30 in the first fight? (Numbers are totally ficticious.)

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

I break it down here.

A word of advice. I have been a DM since the 1970s. Back then we didn't have a miniature for almost everything. We used pennies, erasers, whatever we could find to proxy as the monsters. Today is different with all the available prepainted miniatures. But it could get ridiculously expensive to have exactly every mini you need. So don't worry about using proxies. Trying to get 12 Denizens of Leng maybe too much. Having a few of the right minis, then filling the ranks with ghouls or even the pawns really doesn't take away from the gaming experience. I put the actual representation on the front lines, and as they fall I replace a pawn or proxy for the actual miniature.

The RotR and H&M sets does not give you representations of all the creatures the PCs will face in the Adventure Path. You will need proxies at some point. I try to plan out at least two to three gaming sessions in advance. I have a case that I keep the minis I will need. Then I go through the adventure and find the actual mini or what I will uses as a proxy if I don't have the actual mini.

Paizo now has pawns from their Bestiary. This may be a good inexpensive option to fill out your ranks until you can over time expand your minis collection.

Good luck and happy gaming,

You could fill out the ranks quite cheap with this:

RotRL Pawn Collection

If someone doesn't have the hundreds to spend on every AP, this is an awesome alternative.

Paper Minis are a cheap alternative too. Also, the paper minis have ALL the creatures you will encounter.

Thanks for the suggestions everybody. Especially the Pawn and Paper Mini ideas. Now I know to keep my extra Red Dragon too.

Question: are you running the 3.5 book s or the anniversary edition? they made changes to what you need in several fights
