Magus with Shocking Grasp attack?

I just want to confirm I am reading something right.

If a Magus is casting Shocking Grasp throu his sword and attacking with it he would make both attacks at -2/-2 (shock) vs ac and not the shock vs touch ac.

Also if the person he is attacking had metal armor on the attack would be -2/+1(shock) since the spell gives a +3 vs mettal correct?

Read the magus abilities again, and try to learn what each one does on it's own, then combine them.

Spell Combat lets you use a full-round action to cast a standard-action spell, and also full-attack with your weapon. You can cast then attack, or attack then cast. It can be any magus spell with a casting time of a standard action. You can cast Shield, then take a 5' step and hit someone with your sword, for example.

Spellstrike lets you deliver a touch spell with your weapon. It works exactly like delivering a touch spell with a natural weapon or unarmed strike, except you can also use it with the free attack you get from casting a touch spell. (Normally a sorcerer cannot deliver the free touch with his claws, for instance)

Because touch spells grant you a free attack, and because you can use Spellstrike to deliver that attack, if you cast a touch spell you can make a melee attack with your weapon, and if that attack hits, you also deliver the spell. This attack is against normal (full) AC, not against touch AC. If you miss, even if you only miss by 1, you still miss, and you can hold the charge.

When using both abilities together, if the spell you cast with Spell Combat is a touch spell, you can:
1a) Cast a touch spell
1b) Make your free action touch attack, or use Spellstrike to make that attack with your sword
2) Full-attack with your sword
3) Take a 5-foot step

In any order (except 1b must come after 1a).

Here is A Guide to Touch Spells, Spellstrike, and Spell Combat which will explain everything in more detail.

Once you've read that, I'll be happy to answer any questions you still have.

It would have been more helpful if Grick had just said "yes, that's correct, also check out this cool guide." LOL

Yes, you have it right for the most part. -2/-2, and if either of those attacks hits, the shocking grasp is delivered. With the enemy wearing metal armor, the attack bonus would be +1 until you hit and discharge the spell, so theoretically it could be +1/+1, but that's assuming you miss the first time.

Given that he never mentioned Spell Combat, and only implied the use of Spellstrike, answering "yes" may not actually be correct. People are often under the impression that Spellstrike grants an extra attack, so it wouldn't be surprising for someone who doesn't understand how those abilities work to attempt two separate attack rolls in order to deliver the spell. If he is using Spell Combat, then since his metal example had -2/+1 that would mean using the spell last, which is usually not a good idea (due to possibly provoking if cast while threatened, and being unable to discharge that round on a miss).

I think explaining how the abilities work is more helpful than potentially misleading someone.

Thank you both for clearing that up.
