Shrink Item and Throw Anything

Advice

After finding out that shrink item un-shrinks when thrown I wanted to start doing this. Where can I find the rules for throwing such massive items?
Also are there any rules for scaling up other things? Arrows, cannonballs?

So using the third level spell

what did you want to shrink and then throw?

I assume you are the spellcaster.

One interpretation of the spell is it would not return to the bigger size until it landed, thus not crushing your enemies.
"Objects changed by a shrink item spell can be returned to normal composition and size merely by tossing them onto any solid surface..."

Now if you are the caster or have the caster with you the other part becomes important...."or by a word of command from the original caster."

How about you describe the way you want to use the spell and we can decide if the use is worthwhile and valid.

Sorry to bring physics into this, but the only real use for throwing a Shrunken item would be to have it fall on someone. *In Theory*, if something suddenly gained several times its mass while in flight, it would slow to a halt because its kinetic energy wouldn't be enough for it to go at its original speed.

Of course, this is supposed to be a fantasy game, so if you want to say that the magic of un-shrinking an item ignores these inconvenient laws of physics feel free. I would use normal 'thrown improvised weapon' damage (assuming there is such a thing), but increase the size as if it had been affected by something like gravity bow.

I played a wizard like this once in 3.5. He would either toss the shrunken items against a ceiling, toss them above his target and then dismiss the effect, or while "flying" hold the object over his victim and dismiss the effect. In all cases he let gravity do the work. Damage was limited by the height he could drop the object from and the size of the object he could shrink.

Were you to toss a shrunken block of stone against a enemy, the effect would not be nearly so pronounced. However the enemy would still have to content with having several hundred pounds of mass suddenly appearing in their arms.

In all cases I believe the DM was ruling that I was just targeting a square and the enemy got a reflex save to avoid being crushed.

The spell shifts the item 4 size categories - I would find an comparable item in it's shrunk state and shift up the weapon damage size table 4 times.

So a shrunk tree trunk might be comparable to a javelin which does d6 - scaled up 4 times gives 4d6

Using an old 3.5 table the shifts are; (3.5 DMG page 28)

1d2---1d8
1d3---2d6
1d4---3d6
1d6---4d6
1d8---6d6
1d10--6d8
1d12--8d6
2d4---6d6
2d6---8d6
2d8---8d8
2d10--12d8

Might I suggest wrapping cloth-ized bonfires around rocks for weight and throwing those? Also shrinking large glass amphorae (should be craftable with fabricate and sand) full of acid. Actually, wrapping the bonfire around a shrunken amphora of distilled alcohol should produce an impressive amount of boom.

In principle you should be able to distill alcohol quickly with fabricate since it would normally take a craft:alchemy check.

Last time this showed up in regular play the DM tried to cut down on the abusability of it by treating the falling object with the same rules as a cave-in. It worked okay.
