Oversized knife still a knife?

Rules Questions

Would abilities that only work with knifes and the like still work if one uses an oversized knife?

I'm thinking about a small sized knife master rogue with the river rat trait, will he still get the bonuses for using a knife when wielding a medium sized knife?

I guess RAI is no.
But what about RAW? Is there any part of the rules that states that a knife is only a knife as long as it has the right size?

That the gnome/halfling whatever would get a penalty for using the medium sized knife is clear. H'll have to use it two-handed, too. But does it still count as a knife for him? (it is one after all)

RAW, the knive is a knive is a knive. No matter the size.

Now, while things like Weapon Finesse call out that you need a weapon made for your size category to gain its benefits (yup, a too small weapon forces you to revert to use Strength for the to hit modifier just like a weapon that's too big does); the knife master entries don't.

Oh, and a knife is by default a light weapon, so you can still use a medium sized knife as a one-handed weapon (it just won't count as light any more, impacting things like two-weapon fighting)

By RAW it should work.

And I would be inclined to allow it, just because you didn't suggest a large-sized spiked gauntlet or cestus...

However, I am doubtful that will actually be worth it.

It was just something that came to mind as it happens that you find weapons of the wrong size that are too good to not use them.

We had that in one of our games the other way round, where our medium rogue used a small weapon for some time.

And thanks for the info about light weapons becoming onehanded, I didn't remember that.

There are penalties. You trade a higher die of damage, for a less likelihood of hitting.

In the end, as Midnight_Angel stated, a knife, is a knife, is a knife.

This means all knife specific feats and abilities work, regardless of size.

You could wield a large size dagger, and it would deal 1d6 damage, but it would be a two handed weapon for your small PC, and you would take a -4 to hit.
