There are two factors to look out for when considering a settlement:
1. Location
Resource Availability--------------
Mineral
Farmland/Forest
Labor
Water Power
Wind power
Environmental Boundary--------------
Forest-Tundra
Water-Land
Desert-Plain
Foothills-Mountains
Swamp-High ground
Travel Route---------------------------
Crossroad
Rest Stop
Trail
River crossing
Waterway
Fork
Defensive Site----------------------
Dyke
Mound
Mountain
Hill
River bend
Gorge
Pass
2. Purpose
Isolated Farm
Market
Industrial
commercial
mining
Administrative
Military
Cultural
Educational
Ecclesiastical
Residence of overlord
Resort
Residential (built to provide homes)
Port
So considering these two concepts of Location and Purpose - what best describes your settlement/community where you live?

Don't you mean "What is the place you live in like and where is it?"
If that is the question, then rural, Appalachian foothills. Lots of rivers, lots of natural resources: timer, coal, natural gas, some crude production and salt. Farmland for cattle (though sheep do better with the hills we have), perfect weather for orchards. It's too bad they have to build towns on the fertile ground...
My state's population is under 1.5, and the two largest cities have 50,000 each. They are only a 45 minute interstate drive from one another. Drive less than half an hour away from this area and you get to where you can go for miles without seeing a house.
The only thing that really sucks is the mountaintop removal....ugly stains on the land. I gets sick at my stomach to see it.
