Question about spell ruling.

Rules Questions

So recently it came up that a Sorcerer in my group wants to eventually use Create Demiplane, Greater someday to create a plane where 1 year passes there while only 1 hour passes by on the Prime Material Plane. He says that it is completely valid based on "Flowing Time" from page 185 in the Game Master Guide.

While our DM agrees that it is totally valid for a plane to have this quality, the spell doesn't allow it based on this line:

Quote:
By default, time passes at the normal rate in your demiplane. By selecting this feature, you may make your plane have the erratic time, flowing time (half or double normal time), or timeless trait (see Time, GameMastery Guide 185).

That according to the spell, the only valid "Flowing Time" options are Half or Double normal time.

Thoughts? DM right RAW but not RAI? DM reading too much into it (his thought was that it wouldn't specify half or double if it was intended to be anything).

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Is he using the spell? Then he uses the rules the spell allows him to use. So he can only use half or double normal time. Or erratic or timeless, I suppose.

Unless it's a Pathfinder Society game, your DM can rule whatever way he wants. It's his game.

Right. I wasn't trying to say that the DM was wrong, but wondering if maybe he was being a little more "strict-ish" than other GMs with this spell and wanted the communities opinion.

Utilising the "specific overrides general" rule interpretation method, the GM was spot-on correct by RAW. As said, though, the GM can rule whatever he wants, anyway (though if I ever have a GM that says that Magic Missile fires pink fluffy bunnies that do no damage, I'll be upset), but in this case the player in question was trying to get a specified effect to function like the generalised rule, and the game isn't built that way.

Edit to add: No, I wouldn't let a player use the spell to get more than double-speed of flowing time.
