Disguised as another race?

Pathfinder Society

I'm just wondering if this is legal/allowed in PFS, after reading a few threads here I was worried it might not be, so thought I would ask beforehand to avoid any future problems.

Anyways, what I wanted to do was have a tiefling using the disguise skill and a hat of disguise to appear as a human (in terms of appearances only). Reason being is that in most societies, tieflings are generally shunned/looked down on, so some tieflings may want to try and hide their fiendish heritage if possible.

I believe this should be legal because the disguise skill lists modifiers to be disguised as another age/gender/race/size, but I just wanted to make sure before I play the character.

The PC would need the 1800gp to afford a hat of disguise and would need to have it on one of his chronicle sheets, or have at least 13 fame. Other than that, you're just using the rules for items and skills to have an in-game effect, rather than just stating that something looks like something else, so I think you're fine.

Grand Lodge 5/5

This has been a rather common thing in OP games. As long as he has a legal magical way (Paz spelled it out for HoD) or does it mundanely (which I think would be a bit more than a hat over the horns :) ) I see no reason why you couldn't do it.

He could use the hat to disguise as an Aasimar, which tends to look more human than a tiefling.

The disguise skill is legal for play in PFS. Decent CHA, class skill and some ranks and you'll convince most random NPCs that you're human.

I have a Dwarf character that disguises himself as a gnome. (RP reasons).
I am very careful to tell the PLAYERS this and then have them roll a perception (if they want) for thier PCs... leads to great fun, letting the other players in on the joke. they then play up the fact that their PC knows (or doesn't) but is "playing along with the joke".

I even played a game with a Wangling (spelling?) disguised as another gnome, so we were a party with two "gnomes" that looked very different. "Racial variations". Lots of fun RP at the table. "not you, the other gnome!". As we both had darkvision, several of the other PCs were sure that "Gnomes can see in the dark!". "Just deep gnomes!"

don't forget the disguise kit! that +2 helps!

(and I suggest taking 10 on the Disguise check - but I ALWAYS suggest T10).

And I didn't see the greater hat of disguise on the list, from Curse of the riven sky.

Alright, thanks everyone, so I can do this but a hat of disguise won't work.

Furthering that logic-train, you could appear as an Aasimar with the Scion of Humanity trait and thus appear human :-p

This is amusing to me. I just made a Fetchling with my Grand Convocation boon, and used his Disguise Self SLA last scenario to appear as an Aasimar. I felt that may have been pushing it since Fetchlings are called out in the ARG as trying to disguise themselves as humans, but now I realize I COULDN'T disguise myself as a human. But I could, however, disguise myself as a Succubus or Barbazu no problem.

Unless I use Justin's trick, of course.

And that trick, right there, is what I intend to use *cough*abuse*cough* with a couple of my outsider characters.

There's not a mechanism for disguising yourself has having a trait. If there was, then humans could try to disguise themselves as elves to get low light vision.
I don't see that working out particularly well.

(peanut gallery here):

but, as it is a disguise, wouldn't the people around you just THINK your elf had low light vision?

A human can try and disguise them self as a elf, but that only changes his appearance, he doesn't gain low light or any other mechanical benefit of being an elf. The aasimar trait in question changes their appearance (so they can easily pass as a human), and they are considered human for all effects related to feats, spells etc. But the aim of the "trick" is just to have the appearance of a human, they would gain no mechanical benefit from it.

Yes, if you saw someone that looked like an elf, people would generally assume they have low-light vision. Now whether or not they actually do have low-light vision is another thing.

Exactly. A human would be able to disguise himself as a Half-Orc with the Sacred Tattoo trait; he wouldn't get the bonus to saving throws, but he would have a tattoo that may cause others to assume he did.

After all, changing a trait seems far more minor than changing a subtype.

I was thinking of taking the fiendish facade feat, which would give me a +5 racial bonus to disguise as 1 medium sized race. I originally planned to put the bonus into disguising as a human. But since a hat of disguise won't help me disguise myself as a human, it sounds like a better idea to put the fiendish facade bonus to disguising as an aasimar, correct?

Why stop at Aasimar? Make yourself look like a Solar Angel. Intimidate check? Uhh....don't need one anymore ;)

Yeah, until you actually run into one. Then you're probably toast.

When they throw a CR 20+ monster into a PFS Scenario....you're already kinda hosed.

Yeah, probably. My point still stands.

While amusing, the original goal was to be disguised as a human. I can still disguise myself as any other outsider if needed/wanted, just without the +5 racial bonus.

Jack: True, but seeing as how a solar angel is cr 23 and is not evil (duh of course), I doubt I will run into one, let alone fight one. But then you never know what will happen in future scenarios.

Hey, maybe in the next set of retirement arch scenarios they'll put one in that was driven mad, so now you have to go have tea and biscuits with it and if you flub it up it goes berserk and attacks...

At least we know we can all blame Jack if it does happen.

Side note: I dare Zelthier to try and disguise himself as NOT a tiefling for a scenario. I think that would be the most hilarious thing. Like, ever.

lol, wouldn't put it passed him. But if the party was expected to fight it, it would probably be in a lv 18+ module.

Now why would I do that? I am not ashamed of my heritage, so why should I try to hide it, hm?

Well... Maybe its power has diminished due to its madness and it's only a CR 15 creature.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

so...

A Tiefling PC disguised as a Solar rounds a corner and comes face to face with ...duh-duh-duh... a Solar.

(5 second pause) - "that you Jack?"

(blink-blink) - "yeah, for a second there you had me - I'd forgot you bought that Had of Disguise..."

(moving on down the ally) - "give my best to the Para-countess!"

(continuing the other way) - "yeah, and I'll see you at the Lodge meeting next tuesday!"

If my Tiefling encounters what she thinks is a Solar - I'll likely say something like "Roll to disbelieve!"

Sczarni 2/5

Hahahahah... Lolz.
