Character help please!

Advice

I've been out of the game for awhile now and want to get back in, my problem is this. The game is tomorrow, I have no character, my knowledge of the rules is very rusty, and I have no idea what I want to play. Any thoughts on a class that is simple, rules wise, but is still not plain vanilla fighter? Also this character is for PFS so it won't be going very high level anytime soon and needs a decent amount of power at lvl 1.

Any help is appreciated

Fighters don't have to be plain vanilla. There are all kinds of things you can do with them now. Check out the Advanced Planers Guide and the Ultimate Combat rules on the PRD website:

You'll find lots of cool characterful options without abandoning the straightforward and streamlined design of the pure fighter.

Ranger -- Probably the least rules-intense class other than fighter. Their role both in and out of combat can be easily defined by the player, and does not boast intricate alternate mechanics or resources to track.

Beyond that I cannot help you; you haven't provided enough information. Where do your game play interests lie? What classes have you played in the past? Have you already considered the PFS-specific character choices yet? Alignment preferences? Without more information, anything we can provide is nothing more than a shot in the dark.

Aye, fighters are anything but vanilla in Pathfinder. I would recommend Fighter or Barbarian for a simple but strong lvl 1 character. In fact, let me walk you through a quick half-orc barbarian build right here that will pretty much demolish anything at level 1.

* Race & Class: Half-orc Barbarian.

* Attributes (point-buy 20, which is standard for PFS): STR19, CON16, DEX 14, WIS8, INT8, CHA7. This includes the racial bonus. Also be aware that your Will save will be your biggest weakness at first, but you probably won't even be dealing with will saves at level 1 anyway.

* Gear: Greatsword & Studded Leather. Greatsword to take advantage of STR x 1.5 with melee damage, and the studded leather won't slow you down and will allow you to take full advantage of your Fast Movement. You can't afford a chain shirt with 105 starting GP. You could alternatively go for Scale Mail, which you can afford, that will give you +2 more to AC, but you would miss out on the extra speed. My advice is take the speed and just go with the studded leather.

* Skills: You only get 3 ranks per level, +1 if you want an extra rank for taking Barbarian as a favored class (which I would recommend). Acrobatics, Climb, Perception, Intimidate, and Survival are all good choices.

* Feat: Weapon Focus Greatsword is a good on-the-fly choice, since hitting things is one of the biggest problems at level 1.

And bring this guy to PFS. +6 Attack, 2d6+6 slashing damage, 40 ft. movement, 15 HP, Rage 7 rounds per day (increasing HP, Fortitude, & Attack by 2, and damage by 3). 15 AC (only 13 while raging), 5/2/-1 saves. A little weak on defense, but a fun character to play in melee and in role-play.

Thanks for the suggestions, as for additional info. As I said it has awhile I remember the last thing I played was a Fighter-Inquisitor Gestalt, however that game crashed upon takeoff. For now I will most likely stick to damage, however our core group is lacking in healer from what I've heard. As for alignment, probably CN or CG, I don't want to be spewing evil all over my new playmates. :P

Also, the group I'm joining is already at lvl 4.
