Advice for first PFS character

Advice

Ok, so I think that I've got the first character down pat and I would like to run it by the pros to make sure he's PFS legal and sneak a peek of his Lv20 incarnation for advice on leveling him. His faction will most likely be Orision or The Shadow Lodge.

The Starting Line:
Sayorin Eldius
Male human sohei monk 1
LN medium humanoid (human)
Init+8; Senses Perception +8
__________
Defense
AC 17; touch 17; flat-footed 14 (+2 Dex, +1 dodge, +4 Wis)
HP 12 (1d8+4)
Fort +3 , Ref +4 , Will +6
Defensive Abilities , Resist , Immune
__________
Offense
Speed 30ft. (6sq.)
Melee Nodachi +2 (1d10+3, 18-20/x2) or Unarmed +2 (1d6+2, 20/x2)
Ranged Shuriken +2 (1d2+2, 20/x2)
Special Atks Flurry +1/+1 (1d6+2, 20/x2)
__________

Traits Reactionary, Poverty-stricken

Other Gear Backpack, silk rope(50ft), grappling hook, flint &steel, torch(3), waterskin, ration, small steel mirror, ferret (Fizgig, knows come, fetch, stay); mule with: riding tack (bit & bridle, saddle, saddlebags), feed(4), twine(50ft), thread(50ft), bedroll, crowbar, fishhook(3), hammer, ration(6), hemp rope(50ft), sack(2), sewing needle(2), tent, whetstone.

As for the leveled version, I didn't put too much thought into the spells (as you WILL be able to tell), I've never been in a game thats lasted long enough for me to get to a higher level without starting there, so my experience is a tad lacking in that area. I'm thinking of swapping out Poverty-Stricken for a +1 boost to my Will save so I can have an even +30 and stop OCD'ing over it.

The goal:

His rough-draft back-story:
Sayorin grew up orphaned and in the streets, he learned to live off the land and how to fend for himself. In order to make a living Sayorin joined the pathfinder society and while on a quest he discovered that he could cast magic through sheer force of will. Wielding his trusty nodachi, Sayorin adventures for the Society with his pet Ferret Fizgig. Capable of defending himself with steel and spell, Sayorin seeks out ever-greater challenges to gain more power and prove himself against the horrors of the world.

Sayorin's personal code of honor compells him to defend non-combatants and people who are clearly out-matched by a superior foe. He is, however, content to let a fool rush into danger and get himself killed, if that fool happens to be a fellow Pathfinder he is once again compelled to assist, but only as needed. He belives that a person can only grow through adversity. Sayorin is a powerful and trustworthy ally and a viscious and dangerous foe.

Any help I can get would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not the guy for reviewing in-depth build threads, but I will point out that PFS soft-caps at level 12. Past that, there are a few sanctioned modules you could play with that character, but the scenarios don't go any further. Keep that in mind when deciding on your build, as something that doesn't "come online" until level 8 or whatever (just an example, I haven't looked at your details) is likely to be deeply unsatisfying.

Soft caps at Lv12? Blargh =/
Good to know though.
*giggle*
If thats the case, then I think I might switch to a Magus or Qinggong Monk.

I was doing a bit of reasearch before I responded but my first reactions were the same as Jiggy's. There's no sense in planning a PFS character much past 12th because the highest your ever going to play him is 13th or maybe conceivably 14th. And I'd echo his advice about the long waits you'll have to bring certain things in to play but at the same time I applaud you for thinking long term. I know I made the mistake of not thinking ahead on more than one occasion and it cost me =).

Character appears legal. The ferret interests me because I'm not familiar on how that sort of thing works but other than that you look OK from my first look. I assume you have all the stuff you need to meet the additional resource rules.

The ferret is based off the weasel from Adventurer's Armory. Just a choice of vanity is all. d-(^_~)z Sayorin bought him 'trained' if such a thing is possible since my Cha is tanked. So he knows how to come, stay, and fetch. Nothing of any significant impact on the game. =P

Ah. Yeah. I hate to break this to you, but reskinning of any kind is not allowed in Pathfinder Society. If it is a weasel, then it is a weasel, not a ferret.

There was a huge thread on this issue a few months ago, following the Great Pig Incident at Gen Con 2011. Please do not take this as an invitation to re-open that can of worms.

Ferrets are actually a type of weasel, so in this case it's allowed. Just like deciding your Small Cat AC is lynx or a leopard.

Advice: come up with an idea of a character that you want to roleplay => whack so numbers together => roll with it.

(Ferret's are basically domesticated weasels IRL)

Grand Lodge

Ah. I see. Weasels are genus Mustela, European polecats are are Mustela Putorious, and ferrets are Mustela Putorious furo, a subspecies. I learned something today!

You should also note that permanency isn't a thing in PFS. It's just too hard to adjudicate.

It's not hard to adjudicate at all.

It's just been banned from prior organized campaigns so it was banned in PFS. It could easily be tracked and destroyed by dispels and the like just like any consumable can be tracked and noted as used when it is destroyed (by being used or being sundered or lost, etc).

Haha, ok, so still quite a bit I don't know about PFS. Thanks for the info everyone. I'll update the thread later tonight with a Lv12 goal version. I'll assume the Lv1 version is PFS legal if I get around to actually playing him and not a Magus, Alchemist, or Qinggong Monk. XD

Also, why do my threads keep getting moved?

Talk about Pathfinder Society rules, factions, character creation, and player-based game play experience.

Am I doing something that I shouldn't be doing, or just taking it out of context?

GO JOE?

Dark Archive

In general all character creation threads get moved here after a while, so more of the community can see them and give advice, PFS sub forum holds things for about 24hrs if it fits more than 1 category.

The only time something stays in the PFS subforum is if its completely PFS related and no other section would be applicable (such as PFS specific rulings)

Dark Archive

Which is stupid, because sometimes you want specifically PFS advice that the general forum doesn't tend to give. Even worse, when I've posted stuff saying 'just PFS advice please', I'm asked why I didn't post it in the PFS forum.
