Widen Spell Metamagic Rod?

Rules Questions

In the SRD I was able to find the Widen Spell metamagic feat and the list of metamagic rods, but not a Metamagic Rod of Widen.

Is there such an item?
If it exists, where can I find it?
If it doesn't exist, is there a reason why?

Grand Lodge

I am still waiting for my metamagic rod of Umbral Spell.

There is no metamagic rod of widen, not even in 3.5. I don't know why though.

Grand Lodge

I suppose you can compare it to another metamagic rod with the same level boost, then use that price.

It would be a custom item, but at least not something hard to price.

There is'nt a widen Rod. Take Craft rods and make one yourself. Problem sovled. It makes the rest bearable to pay.

So, nobody knows of some reason why it would be inappropriate?

Grand Lodge

It's not that it is inappropriate, it's just unestablished.
Why? No idea.

@Wraithstrike......... Where did armor come from? Or did you get this and BBT's armor thread mixed up?

Grand Lodge

What?

I somehow posted in the wrong thread, lol. I will delete it.

Yeah great Delete it and make me look crazy.......crazier maybe?

To answer Blueluck though, I don't know why they don't have that rod availible. I have enough trouble trying not to hit party members when the radius is only 20 feet.

Thanks for the answers everyone. I really wanted to make sure there wasn't an intentional exception for Widen Spell before I put it into our game.

Yeah, it can definitely backfire in the wrong situation.

We have a new player who joined our Kingmaker campaign (lot's of outdoor encounters) and he's playing a Gnome Sorcerer with the Draconic (Silver) bloodline. He's using cold based spells in-theme, and recently used Sleet Storm to buy us a couple rounds reprieve from a BBEG.

Sleet Storm:
Range long (400 ft. + 40 ft./level)
Area cylinder (40-ft. radius, 20 ft. high)
Duration 1 round/level
Saving Throw none; Spell Resistance no

Driving sleet blocks all sight (even darkvision) within it and causes the ground in the area to be icy. A creature can walk within or through the area of sleet at half normal speed with a DC 10 Acrobatics check. Failure means it can't move in that round, while failure by 5 or more means it falls (see the Acrobatics skill for details).

Key points
  • 40' radius
  • Half movement rate (or less)
  • Blocks all sight
  • No save
  • No SR
So, for a typical enemy with movement 30, a double-move doesn't get them from the center to the outside. If you double the radius to 80', then it takes a typical enemy three full rounds of double move to get out of the area!

Actually looking at ultimate equipment the widen spell rod is available.

Look at page 179 under table 4-2

Metamagic (+3 spell level), minor 14,000 gp
Metamagic (+3 spell level), normal 54,000 gp
Metamagic (+3 spell level), greater 121,500 gp

Then look at page 180 at table 4-5

and widen spell is on there.

Help

Water Blast (Sp): At 1st level, as a standard action, you can fire a bolt of water at a foe within 30 feet as a ranged touch attack. The foe is knocked prone, and at your option may be pushed 5 feet directly away from you. A reflex save (DC 10 +1/2 your sorcerer level + your Charisma modifier) negates this effect. You can use this ability a number of times per day equal to 3 + your Charisma modifier.

Does that mean Touch attack for prone
then reflex save on push
---------------------------------
or Touch Attack & reflex save for both

Actually, it's listed on table 4-5 in UE, but there's no actual item description among all the other metamagic rods (nor is it among the rest of the rods).

The Widen Metamagic Rod appears to be a phantom as far as the game developers are concerned. I don't understand why it never appeared in the CRB either. At the same cost as the other +3 level metamagic rods, would it really be too overpowered?

The Still Metamagic Rod is non-existent too, but that's sort of understandable - the whole point of Still Spell is not to be waving one's hands about, therefore waving a magical rod about is not an acceptable replacement.

And I can see why the Heighten Metamagic Rod might not exist, as it would be hard to balance.
