PBEM Carrion Crown

Recruitment

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I am looking for four or five characters to star in a PBEM version of Pathfinder’s Adventure Path Carrion Crown. The game is set in Ustalav, the area of Golarion designed for classic, gothic horror (ghosts, vampires, werewolves, etc.). Pathfinder has a free player’s guide to give you further background information on the setting/adventure.

Character selection will NOT be first come first serve, and we will take time to develop characters. The game will have action as well as problem solving so a good mix of characters is recommended. The format will be about two turn recaps per week, and I will do all the dice rolling. I am looking for "roleplayers" whose email posts are NOT a one sentence reply. All players are expected to write two to three paragraphs per post (four to six paragraphs per week) so if you can't meet that schedule please do not bother applying to the game. Please refer to the webpage linked at the signature for simple PBEM rules and sample characters.

If this sounds like a game for you, then send me a character with the following sections: a) appearance, b) background, c) personality, and d) portrait or picture. Please make the characters interesting, the strong and silent types just don't cut it in this type of game. I have posted a sample character as a reference on the type of submission I'm looking for.

Just so you can start thinking about the crunch part (some people work this way), here are some guidelines: core races only, Core Rules and APG, 1st level characters, 20 point buy system for abilities, no evil characters, maximum starting gold, one regular trait, one campaign trait, and one flaw (negative trait to ‘color’ your PC). Take an extra skill point and put in a profession (again to give your PC some additional background). Work your traits/profession into your backstory. I’ll provide a .doc character sheet for you to fill out with stats.

I will accept character submissions (either post here or email me) until Friday July 20, 2012.

Game on!

I've wanted to play in a Carrion Crown game for some time now, but am entirely unfamiliar with PbEM. How does such a game progress? What does it entail? How quickly can you expect to cover the content in the modules?

Mathus is available - no flaw picked as yet. He is a skill monkey alchemist that can do traps. I'll alter him a tad but more or less he is ready to go as is.

Edit: Added in a Negative trait - Pessimist. Not sure if you want something more 'negative' or mechanics tying it in. Profession: Doctor added but I am pretty sure that Heal already covers that.

Hello!

I'd love to be involved. I'll do a lot of the work on the crunch'n'fluff tonight, but will sadly be working away from wifi til Sunday eve. I'd be deeply grateful if you'd wait til then before closing the applications...

I will dot for interest but it will be a couple of days before I can get into creating the char. I have an idea for one.
I am thinking a dwarven warrior who is a weapon smith.

Thanks for your interest. PBEM is 'slow'; I won't lie to you. Read the PATHFINDER PBEM GENERAL file on the website to get a better understanding.

As for covering the modules, I expect it will take months (2-6, depending on turn recaps turnaround time) to cover just the first of six modules. However, it's kind of like reading a book, when it's good you don't want to end.

I went though your character and he looks good. With regards to the mechanics of the negative trait, I want it something similar to a trait so we'll have to work something out for your pessimist (maybe a -1 when interacting with people skills 'cause you just bring them down).

Hey J,

No worries about your timing. I want good quality players so I'm willing to wait. You have until next Friday to post the 'fluff' so take your time.

I look forward to reading about him/her.

The character concept seems doable. As I've said in another post, you have a few days to prepare your character so I'll wait.

Question You list Core and APG as the only resources for character creation. Can we ask permission to use additional sources, provided they are part of the PRD? I've had a Carrion Crown concept in my head for a while that's based on the Ancestor Mystery and the Dual-Cursed Oracle Archetype, both from Ultimate Magic.

Let me think on it, as he is designed to have personal skills at a working level and a -1 to interaction is not 100% where I want to go with that... there is a Negative trait thingy in a 3rd Party supplement I think I got. Let me get back to you... if worse comes to worse then a -1 diplomacy is ok but seems like a poor trade for a profession skill.

I just want these 'flaws' to aid in roleplaying. You can choose something else. I know you tailored your character to fight undead (did a good job too) but maybe his encounter with his 'sister' just goes deeper than he wants to admit and he's 'temporarily slightly shaken' (only -1) in the presence of certain undead or he becomes 'temporarily enraged', not able to keep his cool (can't use any charisma, dexterity, or intelligence based skills) for a couple of rounds when first encountering his source of fear/rage.

I think any of those last two 'flaws' would make for very interesting roleplaying situations.

I'm not familiar with those but I suppose it's OK if it's from the official published sources.

Hey,

Good start. I perused the stats and found nothing glaring back at me but I'll take a closer look later.

Also start thinking about some sort of flaw for your PC.

When can I get the 'real entry' (you know, a) appearance, b) background, c) personality, and d) portrait or picture)? Did you get a chance to see the sample character I placed on the website?

I'm looking forward to reading about how your PC made it from Katapesh to Ustalav.

(this Alias is of Krumthi and it has been used before but I will update it correctly for this )

Uiri was born into the clan of Deephelm and because of this he was taught in the ways of Armor and Weapon smithing. His Clan had a small shop that he apprenticed at while during his young age. Before he could finish his apprenticeship there he was in a fight with another one of the dwarves that was there. He had been in a bar fight after consuming a large amount of mead. He took up his great axe and split the skull of one of the humans that had been working in the town. He was then imprisoned and marked with the symbol of killer on his forearm. After that he was banished from the town and was put on to a caravan to the town of Katapesh from where he caught a ship to Absalom from there he finished his apprenticeship and started a new shop. It did not take long though before someone noticed his mark and he had to move off again. Moving from place to place he finally was able to set down near the settlement of Caliphas. This is point where his story begins.

Uiri is a red haired dwarf that his beard gown down to the middle of his barreled chest. He carries around a great axe with him at all times. When he is not working at his own shop he is out scouring the countryside for ore.

The attitude of Uiri is one of that is fast to get angry and fast to get upset about the littlest things. When he is drinking he is overly rude and crude. He is best when he is working alone in his forge. When he is working with a group you can bet that he will want to be the leader of the group so no one undermines him at all.

The attitude of Uiri is one of that is fast to get angry and fast to get upset about...

OK. Don't worry about updating his Alias as we will NOT be playing on the Paizo boards (or any other boards). Once your character is accepted, I'll send you a sheet for you to fill out with his statistics. We'll use email for posting and I'll collect and sort out all the emails into a turn recap. This turn recap will be sent out and uploaded to the website I've set up for the game. Once the turn recap goes out, you can forget all the previous posts and only have to read the recap to find out what's going on in the game.

Are you suggesting his 'fast to get angry and fast to get upset' as his character flaw. If so, I think he would be penalized (can't use any skills based on charisma, dexterity, and intelligence) for 2d4 rounds. However, what would make him upset? It's got to be something somewhat specific (I don't want an angry dwarf running around in my game). Is he upset about people bringing up his past (people asking him about his brand)? Any ideas...

I also want you to tie him to Professor Lorrimor. Please see possible connections in the Carrion Crown Player's Guide: http://paizo.com/products/btpy8j0q?Pathfinder-Adventure-Path-Carrion-Crown- Players-Guide.

I'm looking forward to fleshing this guy out some more.

Hey everyone,

I've posted a document called "My Humble Guide to PBeM Games" for those of you who want to know more about this type of game. The 'guide' was written back in 1999 but is a good primer on what to expect. It can be found here: https://sites.google.com/site/pbemfabianscarrioncrown/non-player-characters .

Questions, comments, and/or suggestions?

Portrait

Flaw: Shaken by the Undead -1 to fear saves vs undead.

It doesn't cripple the character - vengeance still drives him more than his fear. It also balances against the value of the skill point. Occassionally damaging against occassionally used. I am all for negative traits but I like to try to have them balance.

If Profession checks will provide a favourable bonus to other skill checks etc then a -2 save but for a single profession skill point, I think -1 to saves is about right... but at the end of the day, you're the boss. I'll update later depending on your comments.

Portrait was OK; not your typical RPG hero but doable. :)

With regards to your flaw, I'm not looking out so much for the stats but rather the roleplaying flavor of it so if you're ready to play a character that's afraid of undead in Carrion Crown, then that's great.

BTW, I wasn't trying to balance out the flaw with the extra skill point for a profession. The profession was to flesh out your character a little more and also to give opportunity for some to gain some 'trust' in the town where you'll be playing. I'll explain more on that later.

So we'll keep your flaw with the stats you suggested and I'm looking forward to you roleplaying it.

Fabian

*Up dated and ready.

So far only seeing myself and one other up...

I have re-read your initial post.

I will be on leave and largely without computer from the 24th *Australia time* to the 31st.

Not sure if this invalidates my entry or not. As for the rest, I am a pretty decent poster in the 4 active PBEMs I am involved in - depending on game focus and GM activity I post most days and will likely post multiple entries if the flow is there as I tend to be on line normally around 15-16 hours a day.

Mathus Kohlheim wrote:

The recruitment post is not yet 48 hours old so I'm not worried.

So far there are two character applications complete (one of them needs a little work still) and two other people who are working on applications on this board.

There are also three other people preparing applications who replied directly to my email address.

If all those people come through then there will be 7 character applications and all I need is 4-5 characters to get the game going.

I'm looking forward to this game!

Fabian

This will be hopefully be a 'long' and fun campaign so the absence of a player for 7 days will NOT invalidate him playing in it, especially if I know ahead of time. We'll just carry your character along for the time.

I'm glad you can post often; that always helps the game.

Also out of curiosity, what PBEMs are you playing in?

Hey,

I looked at the Carrion Crown campaign you are participating and you are obviously more advanced than this one (which hasn't even started :)) In any case, I trust you can separate player knowledge and character knowledge and be able to play in this campaign as well so I'm not worried.

BTW, what you are playing in are Play By Post (PBP) games and not Play By EMail (PBEM) games, a slightly different animal. Each have their own strengths and weaknesses.

Hey I heard about this PBEM game and was interested. I was thinking maybe I could play a Halfling Rogue. I could get this done in a couple of days. I also love horror campaigns and was really exited there was one for a PBEM.

By the way, i'm getting the character picture from my fan website where I collected a whole bunch of pictures. Feel free to use any pictures.

Hey Bella,

A halfling ranger sounds good too. Please make sure you tie the character to professor Lorrimor.

I look forward to reading about her.

Here's my character story I'll send the portrait later :)

Wandesii Trickfoot
Appearance
Wandesii is 25, barely a young adult for a halfling. She has black hair, brown eyes, and a distinctive mark on her face, a reminder of the human owners she once had. She is about 3 feet tall and slim for a halfling. She is normally in her leather armor, carrying a beautiful quiver engraved with pictures of plants and a finely-made bow. She purchased these items with the money she acquired when she escaped.
Background
She was born a slave in the city of Kantaria in Cheliax. The halfling served in her master’s hunting lodge in the forest of Barrowood. As was common with other slaves, she was tortured and branded. Three simple rules were etched into her young mind: 1) Do not steal from your master, 2) Do not try to escape, and 3) Obey your master’s every whim. Her master made an example of her sister as a warning to any who would ignore these rules. A simple accident while serving dinner to some guests cost her sister a beating that forced her to limp the rest of her miserable life.
With a heavy heart, Wandesii decided to abandon her sister and seek out a better life. She stole a few pieces of jewelry from her master, including a precious ring and left that very same night. The halfling knew that she’d just forfeited her life and anyone in Cheliax would turn her in for a reward. Her fellow slaves told her to head east where she would find help but she had 500 miles of dangerous country to cross. So she stayed off main roads and limited her contact with people, forcing her to live of what she could scrounge from the land. She endured many days without food and barely drinking water from questionable sources. At last Andoran welcomed her tired feet.
While in Andoran, she came to embrace her new found skills and hired herself out as an outdoors guide. She honed her skill with a bow and put her natural stealth abilities to good use. It was in one of these outings that she met Professor Lorrimor. She served as his guide in the Arthfell Forest. With the professor being an ardent anti-slavery supporter, he became very interested in her first-hand experiences as a slave. In turn, the professor taught her about other lands he’d traveled to and their particular history [Teacher’s pet: Kowledge (History)]. They struck a friendship that lasted many years. It was with a sad demeanor that she received the news of her friend’s passing.

Personality
Years surviving in the wilds made Wandesii a tough Halfling who can speak for herself and doesn’t need people to look after her. In contrast to her former slave life, she doesn’t let small things ruin her fun. She believes that her former master has sent people after her to recover his precious ring and so is a bit paranoid near new people. She never sold the signet ring fearing people would recognize it and seize her on the spot.
One of the few positive things to come from her slavery is her cooking skills. She’s a bit annoyed when people stare at her ‘slave’ brand on her right cheek.

Isabella Milano wrote:

Wandesii Trickfoot

I like her! Have you thought about a profession? Did she work as a guide? It sounds like her cooking skills could earn her some money...

What about a character flaw? Does she become defensive when people stare at her?

Been wanting to play Carrion Crown for ages, but complete noob to PBEM gaming. Still, if there's an opening for a dwarf cleric of Cayden Cailean, I'd love to introduce Grogan to the group. After working at a small inn in Kalsgard most of his life, Grogan had a religious experience. Or a drinking contest with an Ulfen barbarian. Regardless, the next day, he left his home, walking south and following the example of his wandering patron deity.

It has been several years since he left Kalsgard, and he has wandered to many places. He worked as a brewer in many inns and taverns throughout Golarion, and it was in a tavern in Daggermark that he first encountered the Professor. He spoke with the scholar for several hours over the course of a couple of slow nights, and the last night was when the assassins decided to go after the professor. Grogan watched them slip out after the old man, and then he picked up his warhammer and slipped out after them. It was the first time he felt the power of Cayden filling him, making him fast and powerful.

Though the bond of friendship he formed with the professor that night would alter the course of his life in ways he could not yet imagine, Grogan was mostly struck by the connection he felt to his god. That, and the enmity of the powerful Daggermark Assassin's guild. By dawn, Grogan and the professor were on their way to Greengold.

News of his old friend's death reached Grogan in the Five Kings Mountains, attempting again to find a place within the highly structured society of the dwarves. Again, he found that his skill as a brewer was valued, but his independence made him an outcast. The news saddened him, but the excuse to leave the constrictive society of dwarves was welcome.

((haven't thoroughly crunched the numbers, but thinking a battle-oriented cleric, dumping CHA (and therefore, channeling) travel and ferocity (strength) domains. There is a possibility of a flavor dip into the drunken brute barbarian archetype. Chance Savior would be the campaign trait, and the rest remains uncertain, at the moment. I was thinking that his flaw would be a -1 penalty to skills per day without alcohol, topping out at -3. It's not a major flaw for a character with only a few skill points, but it fits the character and adds a certain amount of flavor.)) Hey Sai,

Thanks for your interest in the game. With regards to being a noob to PBEMs, don't worry. All you need is to like to write and you'll see that we'll write a cool story together.

I think your dwarf is fine. You got a connection to the professor and a reasonable flaw for your character. You've got a profession and some background info, even a pic. I'm fine with deity, domains, etc.

I think all I need is to ask for a favor, would you mind putting all the information that you already have into the a) appearance, b) background, c) personality format? The reason I ask is so I can then post these characters on the website set up for the game.

With regards to crunch, I'll send out a sheet for you to fill out on Friday.

Thanks again for the application.

Fabian

Absolutely.
That all came out a bit stream-of-consciousness, didn't it?

Appearance:

http://fc06.deviantart.net/fs13/f/2007/020/0/4/Dwarf_no__6_by_Kseronarogu.j pg

Background:

After working at a small inn in Kalsgard most of his life, Grogan had what he calls a religious experience. Or what a sane man might call a drinking contest with an Ulfen barbarian.

Personality:

Grogan is a bit of an acquired taste, but to his credit, he knows it. He tends to stay quiet most of the time, allowing his apple brandy to speak for him with friends, and his warhammer with enemies. When he does open his mouth, it is usually to expound upon the finer points of distilling liquor, to ruin a good joke by telling it, or to recite appallingly bad poetry at whatever unfortunate female has captured his attention for the moment. Fortunately, these incidents are rare.

Absolutely.

That all came out a bit stream-of-consciousness, didn't it?

Thanks, just what I need.

Hi Sai,

After a quick look, I noticed your charisma score. I'm envisioning heroes for this game so nothing below an 8 in abilities (after all modifiers) so can you do me a favor and fix that.

Thanks!

Fabian

Hi Fabian,

My character's profession is she works as a wilderness guide and voluntarily as a cook in an orphanage. Her character flaw is when she meets new people, she gets paranoid until she gets to know them better or when people stare at her mark. She then gets -1 on bluff, diplomacy, intimidate, and sense motive skill checks the first time she meets them.

Send you the picture by email.

His personality will probably be a little less fatal with a higher CHA. A friendly dwarf with a tendency to sing songs he probably shouldn't. Honestly, he had no idea halflings were so sensitive about their height.

Thanks! keep tuned for character selection on Saturday.

L8r,

Fabian

Hey, I am very interested in Carrior Crown, have this character, would need to be modified for a 20 pt buy and add a flaw. Trying to sort out in my head whether I want to do the PBEM thing or wait for another PBP opportunity. I am thinking about your format, approach and I like it. I generally would prefer a faster pasce, which is why I'm debating PBP or PBEM. About twice as fast as you've suggested would be ideal for me long-term (not trying to influence at all, just my thoughts).

Marchello Aria - undead hunting Inquisitor

Do you do maps at all? (don't care either way).

Anyway, let me know what you think.

Thanks

I like your character so consider yourself in the running for a spot. If you do get selected, I want your commitment to the posting schedule/quality. The game may be slow in 'moving the story forward' but with 2 turns per week you can sure that there's plenty going on. You'll see a lot more character development and interaction with other PCs. However to be fair to others, don't take a spot just to quit after a few days.

We use maps and visual aids as appropriate. Take a look at https://sites.google.com/site/pbemfabianscarrioncrown/non-player-characters for some samples.

Your character just needs some minor tweaks but we'll cross that bridge at a later time.

L8r,

Fabian

Hey all!

Thanks to all that put some work in those character submissions and I hope you find a game that suits your needs.

I hope this isn't the case for this game but PBEM games are notorious for players leaving so you may want to make yourself available for any future openings. You may also follow along by reading the turns off the website or even getting individual emails (PM me for this).

Thanks again but...

Application time is over and I've selected the following PCs to play in the Carrion Crown PBEM!!!

The party will be as follows:
- female halfling ranger played by Isabella,
- male half-orc paladin played by Gary,
- female human magus played by Angie,
- male human (Ulfen) oracle played by Jussi, and
- male human alchemist played by Helaman.

If you haven't done so yet, please download the Kuno Character Sheet from the website: https://sites.google.com/site/pbemfabianscarrioncrown/non-player-characters and modify it for your character.

Expect a first post sometime this weekend so we can get started (even if we haven't quite ironed out any wrinkles in the character sheets).

I'm looking forward to this game!

Fabian

PS: Helaman, please PM me your email address asap. The game will be off the boards.

PM sent - as said before, I am in Thailand from tomorrow for 6 days... call me a late arrival.

Grand Lodge

I see application time is over, any chance of a late arrival? Mature player, several years exp playing pathfinder....

Hey,

I just saw this today but unfortunately, the players have been selected. The game is going well. I already had to replace one player but we seem to have a good group now.

If you care to follow along, here's the website: https://sites.google.com/site/pbemfabianscarrioncrown/home.

Happy gaming!
