Mystic Past Life states that you can add spells from another spellcasting class to your spell list, so long as they're the same type (arcane or divine). The number you add is 1+your spellcasting class's key ability score (ie. Wisdom for clerics). This is done and chosen at 1st level, and can not be changed, but they do not have to be 1st level spells. You just don't access them until you're the proper level.

Here's my question. Say you know you're going to reach 20 HD. Or at least, that's what the GM's told you is going to happen. Could you make that be all 9th level spells?

Grand Lodge

Yes.

You certainly could, but it probably wouldn't be a very good idea to deny yourself this advantage for so long. Even for a game starting at level 20 I probably wouldn't pick more than 1 or 2 9s, as most lists already has quite a few good spells at 9th level, and you only get a limited number per day in any case.

There is also quite a bit of overlap between the high level spells for clerics and druids, and witches and wizards respectively. I guess it would shine most for witches, as they lack many of the very powerful 9th level spells on the wizard list.

I do not believe you have to select them all from first level. But you would not really be able to take full advantage of the ability until you could actually learn and cast that spell. There are similar powers such as Lore Seeker Trait that would have the same issue.

On a side note... the spell must be the same type meaning arcane or divine. But could you use the power to get say CLW from the Bard list for your wizard?

Yes, bard CLW is an arcane spell. You could also get stuff like raise dead from the witch list as a wizard.

Sounds like fair game to me, do bards learn heal? (well if not, just copy a witch's heal and be done with it)

Follow up question. Player wants to play an oracle. You're supposed to choose from a different spell casting class's list. This means that you can't take from the cleric, right? Because they share the same spell list. Much like a wizard and sorcerer share the same spells. Am I correct?

Why would you ever take anything from the cleric list as an oracle? The spells are already on your list, so it would have no effect what so ever.

Remember that you don't gain them as spells known, they just get added to your list.

Oracle and Cleric use the exact same spells. So there is no advantage to picking from a Cleric. They can choose Druid, Paladin, Inquisitor, and Ranger for their spells.

I did not notice this. Thanks.

Finally a legit way to get a Witch into Arcane Trickster!

Interesting. I hadn't even noticed that witches don't get that.
