Damage dice progression

I am new to pathfinder, and i am looking through the various sourcebooks to find out how a character's melee damage increases as they level, but i cannot find it.

Are feats/spells/magic gear the only way to get a longsword that does more than 1d8? (other than boosting STR)

Or is there a progression of increased dmage as a player levels up?

Damage stays static for melee weapons as players level. The only way to get it to increase is through feats, magic and such.

A first level fighters longsword will do 1d8 and so will a level 20's.
