Let say i'm using a detect magic item (or casting the spell) and come face to face with a patron escorted by his two invisible bodyguard!
Do i "sense" 2 different auras of illusion near the patron?
Do i actually see the "shape like" aura of 2 bully behind the patron?
Do i see nothing at all?
P.S. this as probably been adressed in the passed but i'm in a hurry for tonight game and i'm not at home!
Thanx all

Round 1 of DM: You will know there are magical sources (but not how many, strength or where) within the 60' cone. Your targets would have to be in that cone to even get that info.
Round 2 of DM: The number or magical auras and the most powerful one.
Round 3 of DM: The strehgth and location of each aura. This would give you the target square but not pinpoint.
It is easy enough to move out of your 60' cone and foil this poor-mans See Invis. Also keep in mind you have to concentrate to get anything at all, so no other spell casting. "You detect magical auras. The amount of information revealed depends on how long you study a particular area or subject".
Also, if I am Invis and I see you intently watching my area and telling your party that there is something there, I will be doing something about it!
Plus...I can do a lot to you in the 3 rounds it will take you to see my square.

Randy is correct. It's a poor substitute for invisibility purge, glitterdust, faeire fire, see invisibility, etc... But it can work. After 3 rounds. If the foe stayed in the same 60 ft cone that whole time. And tells you from round 3 on the square he's in, still total concealment, and forth.
IME, when it can work, the DM just has the NPC attack and break the invisibility effect sometime between round 2 and 3 anyway. :)
