Grand Convocation was a ton of fun, though it was bumpy for my group at the start. Definitely excited to see this kind of event in the future, as I'm sure a lot of was learned tonight on how to help it go much smoother (I'm looking at you, PaizoCon Europe).
And some yahoo outbid everyone on most of the silent auctions at the last moment, it seems. Hope they have all that cash...

The Grand Convocation had some amazing ideas, but the execution hurt it. It could have been so much more, which makes me sad. But it was still enjoyable.
I absolutely loved the LARPing aspect of it. Everyone who played roles were fantastic... especially Zarta, who seemed particularly drawn to a certain Tengu in the crowd. ;)
However, all of the fun table games kept getting interrupted by "scenes" involving the Venture-Captains that, while interested, were difficult to hear and fully enjoy. I wish they would've done all of those in one big chunk instead of the constant random breaks. It hurt the flow of the Convocation big-time, I feel.
And then the big finale, while cool, turned into yet another "interactive" that contains little-to-zero actual interaction between tables. Just an endless encounter that only stops once it's been defeated a certain number of times.
Anyway, that's my beef. Our table had a really rough beginning even getting inside, but it smoothed out a lot as it went on. I don't envy the organizers and planners for the event, as the amount of work had to have been staggering. They definitely deserve their recognition for putting in such hard work. However, I heard so many people in the lobby complaining about the lack of structure for the Convocation... Hopefully next year's will build upon what was established tonight!
That is all. I'm sure many will disagree with me. I just wanted to throw my pennies out there.

Wow. That was a good/amazing/best.day.I.have.ever.had.of.PFS.
It's 1am, I've finally relented to the need for sleep and I feel like I've had an amazing day. The GM101/102 classes were a ton of fun...I can't wait to adapt them for the Bay Area and Pacificon.
My middle slot, run by Scott Young, was pretty dang good.
And the Grand Convocation (more detail and pictures to come later) was a blast for me and my table. While I recognize that others might have had a different experience (including ThreeEyedSloth above and others that I spoke with after the event), I can't completely explain all the PFS-aura'd geek-happiness that I feel right now after the event.
I recognize that it wasn't perfect.
I recognize that not everyone had similar experiences.
But I also believe the entire event vs. goal was completely satisfied and a total victory for all that were involved. I'm awed and thankful for the opportunity to have participated and for the reach and depth of the event.
There were 30+ tables of Grand Convocation chaos. There there at the *minimum* 20+ individual actor/characters who were woven together into a 5 hour *event*. There might have been some breakdown in story and some slow periods while things happened, it was still an amazing accomplishment.
And for that, I go to sleep with a smile on my face and grateful for the experience. I'll have more detail on the morrow...after sleep and coffee.
Thanks again to everyone who made it rock...so many yahoos that I can't even begin to name (or thank) them all. Amazing.

GM 101 was a blast to run (even if Painlord occasionally calls me "Josh" in his posts), even though there were some hiccups in setting up. As much as did the participants, we the GMs picked up some good ideas about event logistics, and we're psyched to weave an even finer presentation tomorrow morning.
What's more, I (with a little help) may have lined up some particularly amazing guest judges and participants for tomorrow's Deck of Many Situations. Stop by to see what all the excitement is about.
Yeah, I'm really good at being acting the problem player. I'm also a really good "bard" who spent feats on the ability to roll natural 1's repeatedly.
For those interested in hearing more about GM 101, I suspect there will be a wider release of some of the materials following Gen Con (our other big presentation).
As a worthwhile note from last night, it was a pleasure to hang out with Shivok and talk about boons.

Actually, Josh = ThreeEyedSloth who was the 'other' problem player from the very first slot of GM 102.
Don't get me wrong, John Compton, you were awesome too as a problem player (you busted me up repeatedly...as if you had *far* too much experience being *that guy*. ;))

Aha! So many new names! I think I had the opportunity to meet Josh however briefly on Thursday night. With the Grand Convocation, there was considerably less time to hang out and talk (out of character, at least), but perhaps I'll have more opportunities today and tomorrow.

The entire group I was with felt the same way about this, especially when it got towards a time crunch at the end. That said, it was still a blast.
Our table had a guy from Alberta who insisted on finding a new way to shut up tall people and he was just fun as hell.

Good morning so far, but having a hard time finding time to type up all that I want to type up for the Grand Convo. I'm hearing more stories from others and it has created a piddlespot-ton of memories/stories.
Anyhoot, playing Portal of the Sacred Rune with a *great* table. It's extremely rare to have a randomly selected of group of Pathfinders who can sneak as a team. Yet, here we are and the lowest stealth mod is +10...which means we're taking 10 as much as we can and just having fun with the mod.
Judge: Majuba (great judge out of Texas)
Andrew B (Redding UK), playing Dakiir, lvl 7
Josh (ThreeEyedSloth, Bay Area), playing Locke (the Risen), lvl 9
Jeremy (Portland), playing Xorb, lvl 7
Garrett (WA local), playing DaNaio, lvl 8
Painlord (demiplane of Pain), playing Princess Isis, lvl 8
We're rocking the first combat, sneaking (and snaking) in and taking out the guards in the first round (after our surprise round).
Our 'real' rogue (it's somewhat rare to have a pure rogue in my reality) has done a bang up job sneaking, percepting, and leading our infiltration efforts.
We are roleplaying our efforts well and while this scenario isn't a roleplaying one, we are trying to RP our characters as we enact this mission.
Btw, Majuba deserves good props for working with us and our party composition to run a fun mod.

Coffee Report: The Peets the bar was strong and good and is keeping me warm. All good. Thought you should know.

I will admit the Grand Convocation was a huge learning curve for me and I learned some things I will be able to do better with next year if we choose to return the event.
As for the social events interrupting the game flow, it is true, and yet again a learning experience. When the socials were going on in the hallway, and there was just dice rolling in the game room, the event seemed disjointed. So, I made a command decision to move everything in the one room. Looking back, it may have not been the best decision but it is a decision I made and I claim it for good or ill.
As for the finale, we are always looking for ways to improve and I ask for your help again. It is definitely difficult to write an event were all levels (1-16?) play together. If you have ideas on how to achieve a better result that isn't wave of creatures and that some tables aren't sitting around for 20-30 minutes because they finished their encounter, please let us know in its own thread.
With that said, I hope people will start a new thread to discuss how we can improve the Grand Convocation the next time we decide to run it, whether that be next year or some future year.

I don't want to belittle the tremendous undertaking it was to put together the Grand Convocation. It was honestly staggering. That alone made it worth checking out.
If refined, I can see the Convocation being something truly extraordinary. You showed that it has TONS of promise and potential, and that's really exciting. Thanks for all of the hard work, Mike.

So ... Painlord asked me to tell a little tale. ... and I couldn't help but indulge him, since it happens to be the story of one of the greatest things tha tever happened to me.
So, I'm an illustrator. I just had two pieces published by Wayfinder magazine, and art (and the business of art) is one one the biggest reasons that I came to PaizoCon 2012.
So, last night, at about 11 o'clock, I happened to wander out onto the veranda outside the bar, and found a large group of peo[ple sitting on the sofas out there, and since they were seeming to have a good time, I thought I would come over and join in the smiles and drinks. As it turned out, there were wonderful people to talk to ... Mark Moreland's wife (Allison, I believe? Appologies), Jason Buhlman, Wayne Reynolds and his wife, and others. And as the hour grew closer to midnight, I began talking to Wayne about art, and got to show him my sketches and things. Soon, others left, and Wayne had just gotten a fresh pint of beer, and wasn't going anywhere soon. So, It was just Jason, Wayne and I talking for an *hour*, one-on-one. We talked about art, marketing one's work, networking ... there was advice and chatting, funny stories (including when Wayne Reynolds once *forgot* to do a piece of art!) Incidentally, Wayne has a delightfully blunt and honest streak when he's had a few. ;)
To sum it up, basically, Wayne is (at least in my opinion), one of the greatest contemporary fantasy artists working in the world today, and he sat down with me - essentially a stranger to him - and critiqued my art, gave me pointers, and advice on my career. I was moon-eyed and my mind was reeling to nearly swooning (maybe it was the beer). I got to meet an idol. I wish I could have half the success that Wayne has.
Turns out, Wayne is not just an idol, but, he's a great guy. If I had to make a list of the people in this world that were two things at once - both someone I admire and someone I'd call friend - I would put Wayne A. Reynolds at the #1 slot on that list. And to make it even better, this morning, after the "Art of Pathfinder Seminar" he signed the cover of my Dungeon #124.
I can't think anything that has ever topped that one. Most Marvelous Day of My Life.

So far Paizocon has been a blast and hopefully I'll be able to attend next year.
Some of the highlights I enjoyed were the swag with reaper giving away a free mini and paizo giving away a green spectre.
The best aspect of this was the social part where I met tons of fellow PFS players from all over the world, some are fantastic roleplayers that really get into character. Meeting the VO's from all over the globe has been great as well.
By and far everyone has been super friendly and the Paizo staff have that down to earth sense about them that really lets you feel at home.
I've seen and talked to many luminaries of this great community.
Definitely one of the highlights for me was playing the part of The Oracle for the Channel Your God event during the Grand Convocation. I had a lots of fun and many players gave me a chance to go all out on the roleplaying....I'm looking at you oh followers of Calistria! ;)
Looking forward to the Paizocon Banquet tonight.

Yar. Just finished my afternoon slot...Rats of Round Mtn, part 1.
There were three main draws to this slot:
1) Playing with Vyle Bard.
2) Playing Rats with the author (Vyle Bard).
3) Joe Caubo was not running the slot. (Kidding!)
GM: Colin (from the GM plantations of Georgia...they grow them as cash crops there)
Jeremy (Portland), playing Xorb, lvl 7
Vyle Bard (Michigan), playing Dr. Fran Cheezyfacer, lvl 7
VC Jason L. (Phoenix), playing Elfdude, level 7
Mattastrophic (Portland), playing Lady Gabrielle, lvl 9
Phillip Nicholson (Austrailia), Sirriano, lvl 8ish
Painlord (demiplane of Pain), playing Princess Isis, lvl 9
Kyle has been talking up this scenario for a while...and on the boards and in real life and online and pretty much everyplace.
I loved a lot of the underlying tenets that went into the design of this scenario. I won't spoil anything, but I appreciate how Baird created encounters that could be 'solved' in many different ways.
Colin, the judge, did a fine job.
And our party worked decently together (::casts sideglances to the Taldan tart, Lady Gabrielle::), so we survived without too much trouble.
* * *
Talking to Andrew Christian right now. We are discussing PFS board personality vs. real life personality. Much like DragnMoon, I can totally hang out with AC and have a beer and talk. I give DMoon and lot of snark, but I like him. Same with AC. I would hang with him again.
Now hanging with Shivok and AC in the hotel bar, talking.
We await the start of the Banquet (7pm).

Just to be honest, I love the banquet. The food may or may not be 'great' (depending on your preferences or the year or whatever), but I always eat well...mostly because I avoid veggies and eat mostly meat.
Twas just fine with me.
Peets coffee available as well.

PaizoCon Preview Banquet:
Erik Mona opens up, welcoming everyone.
Lisa Stevens thanks a slew of the Paizo employees who each are greeted with rounds of awesome applause. Tim (the founder of PaizoCon), Liz Courts, Mark Moreland, and DougDoug (PFS rocks) were awarded Volunteer of the Year awards. I'm awed and grateful to all of them for their efforts.
Tim founded and pushed for the first PaizoCon and has been a steady force ever since (this is PaizoCon #5).
Liz Courts was a volunteer long before she was employed by the company. If you've ever met or dealt with her, she's always consistently friendly and helpful.
Mark Moreland, before he started working for Paizo, helped found and build the Pathfinder wiki. Amazing work.
Doug Miles, aka *our* DougDoug, aka 5Star, won the 2011 Volunteer Award for his outstanding kickassery during his 5 star+ run in 2011. If you've ever met him, you know he's amazing. Rock on, DougDoug. You are missed.

Jason Bulmahn takes the mic to do previews...
Announces the Ultimate Equipment guide. Coming out at Gencon in about a month. 400 items.
Chapter 1: Arms and Armor - old favorites and new
Chapter on Gear: What is a padzahar? It's in the book, I dunno. The gear from 8 previous books will be in this one book. JB emphasizes one stop shopping. New alchemical items.
New types of food: elven rations. Horsemilk? It has it. Fermented.
JB claims there are 18 pages of fermented horsemilk. I choose to believe him.
Full chapter on Magic Arms and Armor. Again copying many of the old books into one location THEN adding much more.
Chapter: Rings, Rods, & Staves. Ring of Rat Fangs?!? Ring of Sacred Mistletoe? 6000gp....+2 on handle animal, know nature, wild empathy....
(Btw, pictures are somewhat blurry...doing the best I can. I do *NOT* guarantee any of the info in this post.)
Chapter on Wondrous Items: HUGE chapter sorted by slot (i.e. belt, body, chest, etc.). Boots of the Mastadon: 10,500 gp...-2 on stealth but gains +2 to overrun & dodge to AC and also get a trample attack. Awesome.
Chapter Artifacts and Other Items: lots of new artifacts and cursed items AND intelligent items. Singing Sword! Lute of Discord! Rod that Should Not Be (lesser)!? Rod that Should Not Be (greater)!?
Appendices: Lots of charts for rolling random items. You can generate treasure with "treasure types" (yes, they are bringing them back...the higher the letter, the better it is). I can't describe it all...but sweet. Helps GMs randomly generate treasure by the type of monster fought vs what kind of treasure said monster type (monstrous humanoid vs. dragon vs. vyle bards, etc.).

JB is announcing his fall release: NPC Codex. 320 page book...stat blocks for every core class for every level from 1 to 20 with character write ups for each. The pages shown are of a dwarven bard 7 on the left, and a elf bard 8 on the right. Different names and lots of neat customization for each. Lots of prestige class stat blocks.
Looks like the NPCs are 15 point builds. Not sure...lvl 19 rogue has 14 str, 22 dex, 15 con, 10 int, 12 wis, 8 cha....(belt +4). (no guarantees on accuracy on those numbers)
* * *
Spring 2013: Ultimate Campaign. Lots of info about how to build your character, fleshing out that background, and new feats. System for determining info about what happens during downtime. Kingdom rebuilding rules will be updated and included.
End of Jason's presentation.

James Jacob takes the mic.
Announces and shows off the re-release of Rise of the Runelords, Deluxe Collectors edition. He shows off the latch and the book is just ginormous. (Btw, the latched case just holds the more normal looking RotR books inside.) Weighs over 10 lbs.
Announces the sequel to RotR and Second Darkness again: Shattered Star AP. The art, of course, looks amazing. James shows of a bunch of the artwork and NPCs for the AP.
JJ spoiled a bit more of the next next AP.

F. Wesley Schneider is next up.
Talked about relaunched Pathfinder Player Companion line. Varisia, Birthplace of Legends, first book. To be released next month.
Holy cow: first page shown talked all about the Shoanti tribal lands and graphic and info. I'm intrigued.
This companion line is really for players...giving lots of rules and description for players. The maps they are presenting are really really good, including player's maps (as opposed to GM maps with locations of stuff, players maps are just maps). Really cool.

Gary Teter to the mic.
Talking about the new Paizo Gamespace: a Paizo Virtual tabletop for online play. Paizo is building the VTT as they want it to be.
Web-browser run VTT. If you can get to Paizo.Com, then you can play with Paizo Gamespace, apparently. No installs, no firewalls, no xyz.
(As a big fan of play by post, I'm excited about this.)
Gary says that when you run APs, the maps, monsters, blahblah will all be available on PaizoGamespace for easy VTT play.
Approach: not implementing Pathfinder rules into the Gamespace. Trusting players to run the game by the rules. Gary does a demo...lots of cool functionality.
Q: When can I use it? Will be release sometime this summer, promises it will improve over time. (Focusing on building community.)
Q: How much will it cost? Nothing.

Can we all take a moment to step back and acknowledge that Paizo looks to be about to fulfill one of the major promises of WotC from 4th Edition that was completely cast aside? And how awesome that is? I'm not trying to stir up any Edition Wars sentiment, but c'mon. This is really cool.

1) More goblins, including a cool goblin doll.
2) The Pathfinder comic book line. Erik shows the first 4 covers for the comic books. Will be available by subscription and in stores. The first series will cover many of the intro of the iconics. $4 each?
3) Announced the Shattered Star Pathfinder Battles minis by WizKids. Prepainted plastic minis. January 2013. 55 minis in the set. Large, medium and small in the set.
Shivok and DMoon have pictures of some of this...maybe they'll post them.
(Baird just bought me another beer. I'm going to be even more useless during the trivia contest. BAIRD!!!)
Amiri is in the set. She has lots of pointy bits.
Lem. Lem looks like a bad ass.
Sheila. Shattered Star path.
Oriana. Grey maiden.

The Pathfinder Society players will be used extensively to playtest the card game. Vic encouraged us to talk to our VCs and find out about how to be a playtester. Talked about the kickstarter project. Raised $307,000 on the initial $50,000 goal.
Ryan is talking about the MMO in some detail and process by which it will be designed. Currently building a technology demo, looking for additional investors. Tech demo is supposed to be ready by the end of September. 90 days.
Talked about Thornkeep and how that was built and decided.
Tech Demo: First step is visualizing the Pathfinder Art style in the 3D world. The demo of the online goblin was a showstopper. Wow. I hope a picture of this gets online.

After the preview speeches was the Trivia contest. 75% of the attendees leave and the rest fill up tables to answer questions about Paizo and Pathfinder products.
It's one of my favorite parts of PaizoCon.
Our team (named "Play, Play, Play!" in honor of DragnMoon) had Baird, DMoon, ToddMorgan, Shivok, SeraphimPunk, Garrett M (local WA player), and a two players I didn't know. Erik Mona was our assigned to our table the Paizo scorekeeper. (Each table had an official scorekeeper and phones/computer/cheating are not allowed.)
The questions:
Lore & People of Paizo:
1) What is the meaning of the Greek work "Paizo"?
2) Who are the 3 founders of Paizo?
3) What are the major of Vic Wertz and Jason Bulmahn?
4) What Paizo employee was on Wheel of Fortune?
5) How many current Paizo employees were at TSR when they were bought by WotC?
Pathfinder RPG Rules:
6) From the Core Rulebook, what is the formula for determining CMD?
7) There are 6 types of giants in the Bestiary. Name the weakest and what is it's CR?
8) Name 3 of the 5 offensive wizard spells from the Beginner's Box.
9) APG: At what level does a summoner get 5th level spells?
10) Ultimate Combat: For small & medium, what is the damage and crit range for the katana?
APs & Mods:
11) Each AP includes two god write-ups in detail written by SKR. What gods were detailed in Legacy of Fire?
12) In Irrisen, what goblin tribe was interrogated by the Pathfinder Society?
13) In what city does the AP Council of Thieves take place?
14) In what country does the module Cult of the Ebon Destroyers take place?
15) In Carrion Crown, which iconic monster does not play a prominent role: Ghost, Flesh Golem, Werewolf, Vampire, Mummy?
Pathfinder Campaign Setting:
16) What is the current Golarion year?
17) What country does not allow the worship of gods?
18) What city in Varisia has the highest population?
19) The Gallowspire is in what country?
20) Name 4 of the Golarion continents.
Pathfinder Characters:
21) What is the name of the former Qadiran faction head? Before the Trade Prince?
22) Which ionic character was in the core rulebook and ultimate combat?
23) What is the real name of the Whispering Tyrant?
24) What CR25 demon lord rules the Tanglebriar?
25) What are the last two lines of the goblin song (RotR)?
(Apologies for any typos, spelling errors, or other mistakes in the above. The contest went quickly and my ability to listen and write and answer is limited.) Please spoiler any answers that you might have.
We scored 21 out of 25 points.
Two tables had perfect scores, with a table of yahoos winning the near unpossible tiebreaker questions. The winners were mocked and pelted with goblin feces as is tradition at the event. Congrats to those unknown, luckified piddlespots.*

I'm with Bryan (above) - if I do any gaming cons next year, I'm giving *serious* thought to making it to PaizoCon.
Of the conventions I've attended (Gencon, D&D XP, Paizocon), Gencon is probably my favorite, but Paizocon is a much better value, and is a much smaller, more intimate affair. If you've already been to Gencon at least once, I highly recommend giving Paizocon a try.

I may lose some gamer points for this, but I've actually never been to a gamer con other than back when I used to LARP and went to White Wolf cons (and those aren't quite the same compared to Gencon/et al)...despite having lived 1 hour south of Milwaukee, WI when GenCon was there for like 10 years, and in Columbus, OH (Origins) for 4 years.
Having seen friends' photos from Gencon, Comicon, and other similar events, I've been convinced that while a panel here or there or game here or there would be fun, the standing in long lines, fighting crowds to get to anything interesting, etc, would mitigate the fun too much. Just like with conferences for my field, the smaller ones tend to be more personable, so I may actually try Paizocon next year as my "first" so to speak.
