Beginner box for the win. Me and my kids loved it. I bought the same thing for D & D about a year ago. I spent 2 weeks trying to figure out how to play it and create a character. Pathfinder made it so easy. While I am not new to RPG's, I am new to d4. How do you read them. I spent the afternoon winging it with my kids (5,8,8) who loved playing it btw. But so much of this game depends on the d4 I need to know how to read it, or else I will never improve my GM skills.

Depends on the style of the d4. Some are designed to be read from the bottom, some from the topmost point. Easiest way to tell the difference? Whichever number is right-side-up when the die is at rest.
The bottom d4s will have the numbers along the sides, and the top d4s will have the numbers on the points.

There is also a third type of d4. I have replaced all my pyramid shaped d4's with this type of die. They hurt a lot less when you step on them.

In that same line of thought :
Back in the day, there was a die called The D4 that Rolls. I think it was by a company calle The Armory. It basically was just a D8 with 1-4 twice. Pretty basic. The company closed down so thos dice are no longer available and I am the envy of my gaming friends... well not that much, but they feel it is so much simpler. And berfore someone asks, no, we never confused the d4's with the d8's.
@Don : those are Q Workshop or somthing like that aren't they. Please share the knowledge! ;-)

Gotta third the dodecahedron d4s... no die shape rolls quite as well as these. You can cover all of your d3, d4, d6, and d12 needs easily with customized dodecahedral dice.
Not to mention d2 and d1 ! :)
As soon as I discovered these things were out there, I bought 20 of them and have been giving sets of 5 as gifts for friends who play wizards who throw magic missles around a lot.

Paizo sells a few dice sets with that type of d4 here.
Edit/ Oops. Sorry. Backordered. Darn.

Well... once I've extracted them from my bare foot... I can generally tell by how much damage I've taken. :)
All joking aside - I agree with all the methods listed above.
