Relationship between PCs / Rebels

Council of Thieves

Something that just came to mind is how do people run the relationship between the PCs and the Westcrown rebels? While the rebels can't/won't do everything for the PCs, how does one keep it from seeming that the PCs are the ones doing everything/getting killed while the rebels are the ones who will be getting all the benefits?

It really depends on how you want to handle them. There is a thread where someone went ahead and created stat blocks for the Children of Westcrown, as well as central motivations for each. That can be helpful to making them more full characters in general.

I had an interesting situation where I was dealing with a party of 3 newbies. The Children of Westcrown have made a wonderful stable of babysitters for them until they grew familiar enough with the system to stand on their own.

Giving the Children of Westcrown their own "stories" can help a lot with this. I have each Child of Westcrown with a long-term goal. Vitti and Larko are trying to track down the shadowbeasts on their own, Fiosa and Sclavo are interested in figuring out ways to counter the church of Asmodeus, etc. You can hand-wave a lot of this and make it seem that the Children of Westcrown are all attempting to solve the problems of the city in their own way, and can even be on parallel paths to the PCs. The PCs end up seeming more like the ones who were on hand and free enough to undertake the "correct" way of fixing the problems. The Children can provide insight, such as Vitti and Larko informing the PCs of a rise in the number of shadow beasts. It might also be good to have them encounter one of the Children in the city actually doing something. My group ended up running into Gorvio escorting a family through the city at night, protecting them from the shadowbeasts.

As a more practical way of showing that the Children are not just piggybacking on the PCs, I encourage my PCs to actively make use of their skills. For example, for a while my party lacked a strong scout/stealth person, so Yakapulio can be used to run reconnaissance. Or before entering Delvehaven, maybe they want to ask Tarvi to start enchanting a wondrous item so it is ready when they emerge. This makes the Children less of "hangers on", and more like pseudo-cohorts.

That sounds good. Perhaps have them use various know-local skills to dig up info for the group while the PCs are out somewhere.
