LianNu Crossbow

Homebrew and House Rules

Silver Crusade

I was just watching a TV show with something called the LianNu crossbow.
It's a massive crossbow and likely would have to be set up in a semi-siege manner.

Anyway...

I have an idea of how to make it for PF

LianNu
Weapon type: Exotic
Cost: 5000 gp
Damage 4d10
Two handed weapon.
Crit 20/X4
Range 200 feet

LianNu is a ground mounted crossbow. It sits on a small table and appears to be a longbow set on its side and affixed to a knotched board. This board has four grooves in. The end of the board is set with a firing mecanisim. The bow is fired with a food pedal. If a foe is within attacking range, they have an attack of oppertunity against the user of the LianNu.
It functions as a ranged weapon.
The LianNu takes one standard action to load if the user is skilled in this weapon.
It takes 4 standard actions to set up, and 6 to take down.

Portable LianNu
Weapon type: Exotic (Wonder)
Cost: 10000 gp
Damage 4d10
Two handed weapon.
Crit 20/X4
Range 200 feet

This weapon is like a LianNu, however it has been spelled to have a portable form in which it folds into a small box that has a bag of holding. It has a leather strap that allows it for easy transport. A word of command causes the Portable LianNu to set up in one standard action. Another word of command causes it to revert to its portable state.

A Portable LianNu should not be put into a bag of holding or portable hole, as it will cause a small area of mass destruction where first a massive explosion happens, then everything within 100 meters is sucked into nothingness.

Sounds and looks more like a ballista with multiple bolts loaded rather than one big bolt. I would agree that four bolts = 4d10 damage, but likely only one or at most two bolts would actually hit a single target. Remember these are designed for warfare, they were employed in batteries that didn't need to be aimed, just pointed at large formations and let loose. As such they would probably not be so effective aimed at small groups or individuals.

I would treat it like an area attack, where it targets squares and each square gets four, two or one bolt depending on how far from the target they are and how the Lian Nu is set up. Each bolt then has a 50% chance of hitting a person in any square it passes through (so it has a chance of hitting a person in the target square, or failing that the square behind it, etc.). If it hits, roll the attack as normal (after all it may not penetrate armour or could be deflected).

I think the reload time should be longer, like a ballista. Even in large battles these were really one-shot shock weapons, after all.

Certainly nasty if a party came upon a foe like a squad of hobgoblins with a couple of these things all pointed their way though...

Actully, they don't spread out in flight, and land in a small enough space to only hit one target.

Cool. The four attacks on one space, or four on one target? Given the size of the weapon I would say one space.

Sovereign Court

Reload on the portable is far too quick. You can reload a heavy crossbow with a standard.

Was answered above.

Considering the age of this thread, there is a good chance none of the above posters are around anymore, or at least active here. I hope this was able to answer your question

It looks like this is just an automated spam post...
