Stealth (Hide in plain sight) vs. Dark Vision

Rules Questions

So... Stealth requires cover or concealment to use. Low light is considered concealment enough to use stealth. And hide in plain sight means you have to be within 10 feet of low light vision. Dark vision sees only in black and white, and kind of negates the need for light, therefore the need for low light...

So the question is... Can you stealth/hide in plain sight away from a creature with dark vision, or does the dark vision simply negate the possibility to hide in plain sight?

Dark Archive

Darkvision should negate your hide chance as he would be able to clearly see you.

Benefit: A rogue with this talent can select a single terrain from the ranger’s favored terrain list. She is a master at hiding in that terrain, and while within that terrain, she can use the Stealth skill to hide, even while being observed.

hide in plain sight has nothing to do with cover. There are two requirements you need to meet to stealth

1) cover or concealment
2) No one can already be looking at you

hide in plain sight helps 2, not 1.

First you need to realize that there are a few abilities named Hide in plain sight. There is the shadowdancer version, and there is the ranger version.

The ranger version has the camouflage ability preceeding it.

But let's go with the shadowdancer version as it's kind of all in one.

Stealth normally requires a few things:

1. To be currently unobserved relative to a given individual.
2. To maintain cover and or concealment relative to that individual at all times (baring special circumstances).
3. A successful stealth roll vs their perception check.

Hide in plain sight replaces 1 & 2 with being within 10' of shadows (the shadowdancer version). This is defined as being within 10' of an area of dim light.

Please note that this is NOT relative to the given individual that you are using stealth against, but rather the absolute condition 'dim light'. It doesn't matter if they can see clearly through it or not as concealment from it is not required.

The ranger version together with the camouflage ability replaces 1&2 with being within one of the ranger's favored terrains.

Simply put darkvision has no bearing on this whatsoever.
