What is a death effect?

Is this a spell with the death descriptor, or is there something more to it?

That or in my opinion anything that has a "Save or you are dead" mechanic attached to it, such as an assassin's death attack.

Spells and abilities that are death effects, will have a line stating "this is a death effect".
