[SPOILER] Captain's Log - Day Seven - My First Mate is Dead.

Skull & Shackles

Grand Lodge

I was in my cabin, maps of the seas sprawled in all directions before me.
At first, the cries seemed like a kicked dog's muffled barks.
Then more voices joined, getting louder and distressed.

"Owlbear NOOOO! Get off Mister Plugg! NOOOO, you kraven beast!"

Owlbear? Plugg's pet kept hidden from the light of most days? Why on Golarion would the simpleton...?

"Oh the horror! Besmara, avert your eyes from the tragedy of your children spilling each others blood!"

The high shrill of the halfling's voice cut me to the spine. Standing now in my open door, I see sailors and officers alike making below deck to where the commotion began.

"Plugg and the Bear have killed each other! Captain Harrigan! Captain come quickly! The First Mate is dead!"

[OOC]

Not just a bit of fluff text...

My group took exception to Plugg's 'sport' with the Owlbear.

A critical grapple.
A fumble.
A Pin.
Eventually, a Coup de Grace.

Day 7 of the Wormwood's voyage. Mister Plugg is dead.

Hahaha... Uh oh. That's going to make the rest of the AP very interesting indeed.

Looks like you need a new first mate.

I sense a gullying and then a keelhauling on the horizon... Let us know how this plays out please! It sounds like a very interesting plot twist.

I... dont understand. I've read and reread your post, but I dont get it.

The PCs killed him and blamed it on Owlbear.

Who's alive to keelhaul? Plugg and Owlbear are both dead, so unless Harrigan figures out the PCs are pulling a fast one.....

I'll bet Master Scourge is wetting himself about now - he's logically next in line for Mate, is terrified of the Captain, and doesn't have Plugg to hide behind anymore. That should be interesting!

Still confused... I thought the Owlbear vs. The PC's fight takes place topside in front of the crew. How did this kill both and lie about it thing happen?

Dark Archive

yea, everyone except the captainn should have been there.

They made their bluff check vs Harrigan? I'm super impressed. But, yea, still seems off to me.

Uhh, people? The Owlbear (CR 1) occurs on Day 5. Azmyth's group staged Plugg's murder on Day 7, as referenced by the log entry in the post title.

After the Owlbear fight, the PC's released the muscular simpleton from his bindings and goaded him into a fatal encounter with Mr Plugg, the two pirates mortally wounding one another in the process - at least that's how I interpret it. Smart thinking of your PC's to get someone else to do their wetwork, but they may have lost a powerful ally by letting Owlbear die.

A level 2 Fighter who is blind in one eye took down a level 5 Fighter who knows his weakness? Ok.

I think it's good that the PC's were thinking outside the box, but I wouldn't have gone that route in my campaign.

As long as you're having fun, you're doing it right.

I think the point is he rolled the dice in the open & Plugg rolled poorly.

Brilliant. Good luck to Scourge.

As for Harrigan : harsh repercusssions on the crew, but, WTF he has no idea who to blame and he needs the crew. And he "hired" crew (PCs) out of a local pub he knew fu** wit about. Very, very stupid of him.

You cant both be pinning someone and also do a coup de grace (which is a full round action), so I'm guessing owlbear was holding plugg down and the PCs coup de graced him?

Wait, can you even coup de grace someone who is pinned? They have the Pinned condition, but need the Helpless condition to coup de grace. oh well, cool story.

So groups play that way.

Pinned/Helpless is as much a logical break as unconscious/sleeping/paralyzed characters having Reflex-saves. The rules - if in doubt- are usually rubbish and more of a guideline. Especially in "pirate" campaigns,

Nevermind that helpless actually lists "held" as a possible condition
