Help me make my monsterous Monster Hunter

Advice

Shadow Lodge

I have an idea for a character for our Carrion Crown game. we are level 9 and my magus has died a few times so I want to have a backup in case his body doesn't make it one of these times.

My idea is a monster hunter who stalks the dark parts of the country. protecting civilization from the shadow. However he knows that the mortal body is not strong enough to stand against the darkness and so has become becoming more like the enemies he hunts. So now he is feared by the people he protects.

Here are the requirements:
-Melee or archer (casters are covered in the group plus it fits the feel).

-Either is permanently transformed or can transform into monsters. No bears and tigers. people should fear him in town.

-Preferably has good knowledge (so he knows whats he fighting)

-Core races only

-Pathfinder material only but it doesn't matter what pathfinder resource it comes from. If it is in the PFSRD I can use it.

-Bonus points if he has an animal/monster companion or a follower

I had the idea of an alchemist/ranger but they are both so level dependent I am not sure it would work.

any ideas?

Summoner, there is an archetype I believe where instead of summoning something, you transform into something. Might be worth looking into, oh, the alchemist archetypes too! Viviscectionist or something!

Inquisitor with the animal domain does every thing you want.

If you play a human, take the Racial Heritage (Kitsune), then take the Fox Shape feat, you have all the shape changing you want.

A melee Druid should work for you.

Actually, two levels in Shapeshifter Ranger, then the rest into Inquisitor will get you absolutely everything you want.
Choose Irori as your god, so you can get Improved unarmed strike for free.
Dump charisma, and still make a great face.
Take Feral Combat Training.
If you can, a Guided Amulet of Mighty fists.

vivsectionist alchemists make great monsters. Summoner-broken archetype works as well(just kidding its the synthesist, but if you're GM and you doesn't know summoners backwards and forwards it will come off as to powerful. Another option 4 levels of melee shape change ranger followed by 1 level in a spontaneous caster(bard, sor, or summoner) take boon companion and go Dragon disciple. You get a monster with str off the chart and a level 4 companion with a few buff spells to make yourself more monstrous. Drop 1/2 levels and the companion make him 2 ranger/2barb or alchemist and watch the str skyrocket. At 9th level I've gotten a caster's str to 28 check out oterisk's guide if you're interested.

So, with the Shapeshifter/Falconer Ranger3/Inquisitor 6 will meet your needs.

1) Shifter’s Blessing will give some monstrous shapechanging options

2) Monster lore will make you knowledgeable about your enemy.

3) You have a falcon companion.

4) You are a master of intimidation.

Hey Everyone Thanks for the Posts. I have a lot to look through.

I don't think the dragon disciple is what I am looking for... wrong flavor.

I may skin the druid. it isn't the worse option, give me alot of what I need, but I would like to be a little less tree hugging and a little more forest burning to kill the vampires inside.

I will look more closely at the shape shifter and inquisitor. That might be a combination that works for me.

Does anyone know anything about the beastmorph alchemist? it seemed interesting...

Check out the Shaman archetypes for the Druid. Several, like the Bear, Lion, or Wolf would make for good melee druids that ditch much of the "tree-hugging" of the standard druid.

OK here are a few things I like after look about (thanks for the ideas).

A Ranger/Inquisitor - He would focus on hunting down enemies of civilization and he serves Erastil. The exact archetypes, as well as all abilities are open still. Animal domain for companion. Strong choice for a ranged guy (if party needs)

A Beastmorph Alchemist - studies the monsters he hunts and uses their abilities against them. Even turns into them on occasion. strong melee choice. may take Master Chymest for extra uses and Personality disorder.

Infiltrator/Beast Master Ranger - This has options as close and ranged. nice choice of companions and the ability to take on aspects of what I hunt. Cool concept. would likely skin to say adaptions were visible and dramatic.

A wolf or lion Shaman Druid - neat partial transform abilities. strong companions and cool summon powers. Not much on the monster hunting side but the rest fits really well.

If I give of the Monsterous part there is also the Beast Master Cavalier/Student of War who would be the ultimate monster hunter and has challenges and teamwork to boot . Admittedly this one would be ideal if I add the monster part. Perhaps add in the Beastmorph Alchemist...

Anyways. any other ideas you guys have you be welcome as well as any ideas that would enhance the above. Thanks!
