What horses can a cavalier start off with / also any cons close to Joplin

Pathfinder Society

Lantern Lodge

1) What I want to know is can my pathfinder society cavalier start off with a heavy horse or just a light horse. The APG, simply states "A medium sized cavalier can select a camel or a horse." Since this character is a PFS character, I want to make sure I am not advertently breaking some rules that I am unaware of. Any help on this would be appreciatied.
2) My other question is does anyone know of any cons remotely near Joplin, MO? To the best of my knowledge they have all disappeared one by one. The closest ones that I know of are Stillwater, OK or Kansas City, MO. There used to be several that were closer, like in Springfield, Joplin, Pittsburg, Ks. They just farther and farther away every year.

I can answer part 1, and will leave the second question to the Pathfinder Society volunteers in your area.

A cavalier treats his mount like an animal companion, so you'd use the horse stats on page 54 of the Core Rulebook to determine the horse's stats at any given level. Since a heavy horse uses the horse monster stats (which are static and do not advance as your character goes up in level) as well as the advanced creature simple template, it is not eligible as a selection for this class feature. If you wanted to purchase a heavy horse and train it independently from your bonded mount, you could do so, but you would only be able to take a single animal into combat with you.

Mark is correct. You can also take the beast rider archetype to be able to select different mounts. Which needs to be mentioned cuz of how awesome riding a mastodon into battle would be

Although it should be noted that RAW, a Medium-size Beast Rider Cavalier cannot ride a Mastodon until level 7. Or any of the other choices offered to them at level 4, for that matter.

I would also urge the OP to consider very carefully whether they want to play a Cavalier in PFS. Few of the scenarios will allow a Medium-sized rider to make much use of their mount. Just something to keep in mind.

Brad,

I am in Springfield and I hear you on the state of Cons in the area. That old gray mare ain't what she used to be!

That being said there are still some are some con gaming opportunities in the Area. In Springfield itself we have GAME in October and Vision-con in February. The local group I game with will run PFS scenarios at both of those. Cog-con is in Rolla in October and is pretty much just about PFS anymore. Also KC Game fair in November usually has quite a bit of PFS.

As an aside if you feel like driving over to Springfield sometime we run PFS every first and third Monday nights. If you don't mind gaming with the brothers St. Jacques! *clap clap* (Long Story)

Here's what I'm reading:

Medium beast riders can choose a camel or horse mount at 1st level. At 4th level, a Medium beast rider can also choose an allosaurus, ankylosaurus, arsinoitherium, aurochs, bison, brachiosaurus, elephant, glyptodon, hippopotamus, lion, mastodon, megaloceros, giant snapping turtle, tiger, triceratops, or tyrannosaurus as his mount. Additional mounts might be available with GM approval.

So the specific rules would override any general rules stated beforehand.

edit: sorry for derailing! :)

I wish that were true.

The only thing you noted was that you still had to pick a size appropriate mount. The archetypes do still allow you expanded lists, however.

You do have the option though of dismissing a mount to get a new mount when you are high enough level to get a more desirable mount that now is large enough for your character.

That's correct. They allow an expanded list at level 4, but don't allow you to actually use any of those options until level 7. Why give a list of mounts you cannot select at level 4? Why not just make them available at level 7 when you can actually select them?

As written, it's misleading at best, which is likely to frustrate players who don't manage to unravel all of the rules before locking themselves into an archetype. An archetype they won't be able to make use of for more than half the life of their PC.

The Cavalier has enough problems already in PFS.

Best resource for conventions in the south is here. Not sure how far you are willing to drive but I recommend that people be willing to drive 6 hours for a local convention.

Scarab Sages 4/5

Here is a local one for you http://www.archonstl.org/36/ there is another one that is billed as the official convention of the Twilight movies sounds great http://www.twilightconvention.com/cal/twilight_kansascity.htm

Shameless Plug time!!!!

But if you really want to come to an awesome convention you should come to my company's convention.

I just created a cavalier character for PFS and chose the camel because they spit. I forsee much spiting as the acerbic camel announces his displeasure by hocking a lugie at the back of his riders head as they delve into a dungeon leaving the camel to guard the packs. I don't care that I may not be able to take the camel everywhere I go. As long as I get to have fun playing with the characters.

Yes, if you want to take the kewl mounts at level 4 you should be a half-ling or a gnome. As for me, I shall be keeping my camel.

Hence the SOONER they make Houndmaster as an actual archtype, the better.
