Out of curiosity, if you summon a viper or other poison using critter, can you effectively "milk" them for the poison for any poison using buddies: ninja, assassin, ect. Or does the poison disappear when the summons ends?

No, and this holds true for anything like this lasting after a conjuration (summoning) spell ends,

so out of curiosity, so lets say that you summon at lvl 2, It bites and poisons the person and they fail they're save both times. on round 3 when the snake vanishes, the monster wouldn't have to save versus the poison anymore, even though they failed every save?

So when the summoned creature disappears, does their poison also disappear from the bodies of affected victims?

ooh you darn glitches in the system

I'm not sure about poison, but magic effects cast by a summoned creature end when they disappear. From the section here on "Summoning" spells, from the Magic chapter of the Core Rulebook.

Quote:

Summoning: A summoning spell instantly brings a creature or object to a place you designate. When the spell ends or is dispelled, a summoned creature is instantly sent back to where it came from, but a summoned object is not sent back unless the spell description specifically indicates this. A summoned creature also goes away if it is killed or if its hit points drop to 0 or lower, but it is not really dead. It takes 24 hours for the creature to reform, during which time it can't be summoned again.

When the spell that summoned a creature ends and the creature disappears, all the spells it has cast expire. A summoned creature cannot use any innate summoning abilities it may have.

So, while I'm not certain about poison, the fact that spells they've cast ending could be used as a basis for poison disappearing when they do too.

Makes that viper kinda useless at first level doesn't it?

If poison is listed as an Extraordinary Ability, I don't see why it should disappear when the duration of the summon expires.

If you want to limit potential abuse, treat it like acid splash and create food and water. All that wasn't "used" or "consumed" disappear after the duration of the spell, although their effect remains beyond their duration.

so I'm guessing there's no definitive answer to this question?

Grand Lodge

The definitive answer is this.

1. You can't milk, steal gear from, or get anything from your summoned critter. Anything you take from them disappears when they do.

2. Effects inflicted on creatures, poison, energy drain, stat damage, etc. DO persist.

So in the example above your milked poison disappears, but you still have to deal with the effects of the bite you got in the process of trying.

I'm curious if you can point to anywhere that makes this so?

If the poison disappears when the creature does, would it not have the unfortunate side effect of the poison disappearing from the enemy body as well.

My post was to find a rules answer to this question, or maybe a faq that I missed.

If a monster hits you with an affect(such as poison) you still have to deal with it.

There are also no rules for milking poison. Poison would have to be made using the craft skill unless a GM says otherwise.

Most GM's would not allows you to keep the poison even if monsters could be milked. It probably does not make sense, but it is a game balance issue. As an example if you tried to eat a summoned monsters most GM's would not allow you to get nourishment from it, even if you carved only a small piece off, and managed to keep the monster alive.
