Create Undead (Ghast): worth it? or am I missing some updates....

Rules Questions

my 5th level (Necromancer) Wizard went out and bought a scroll of Create Undead at 12th level, made a caster level check and created a Ghast.

So, looking in the Beastiary, under Ghoul / Ghast, the Ghast is a slightly beefed up version of the Ghoul.... But, it would still be a 2HD creature, right?

When looking at all four types of undead that Create Undead can make, the first two are 2D, the third (mummy) is 8HD, and the fourth (morgh) is 14HD!

I tried to convince my GM to split the difference and make my Ghast a 4HD creature, but he said "No". If there's something offical out there that I haven't yet been able to find, he'll accept that... else I'm stuck with a very costly 2HD creature.... :)

So, does anyone know if there were any updates to indicate that a Ghast created has a higher HD?

thanks for any info....

Perhaps your DM will allow you to take the leadership feat and let the ghast gain class levels.

Persuade your DM to allow you to use the 3.5 version of ghasts, which were 4HD creatures.

Usually sticking with pathfinder gets better results. Just saying.

ooh, Leadership - that could work for the future, but it'll be quite some time before my character goes up another level where she can get any feat....

but he might allow for the 3.5 version... or it could beef up my argument that my Ghast should be higher HD....

thanks!

Monsters can have more HD. It's under the monster advancement rules. It's in fact the most common way that monsters advance. That being said, monsters can also have class levels. I would recommend asking the GM if you can take Leadership and make the ghast your cohort using its total CR in place of character level (as is done when playing monsterous PCs; where a CR 3 ogre is considered a level 3 character). Doing so would allow your ghast to take PC or NPC levels or advance in some other method.

Ghast by themselves are somewhat questionable minions, given their 2 HD vs cost. They are, however, amazingly versatile as PCs, given they are a 2nd level character by default. They make a good most anything, as they have between a +6 to +8 in all their ability scores; so whether martial or magical, ghasts deliver as PCs.
