does an animal without combat training still threaten within their reach?

Rules Questions

Pretty much as the title says.

Example: would a wild horse threaten (aka take an AOO on) a goblin that moves around it before or after the goblin attacks?

Yes, but it's less clear whether the animal would attack, attempt to flee, or cower. For example a horse is pretty much hard wired to flee when threatened. It takes a lot of training to get them to attack. I do think they would attack if cornered, but generally they run for it.

Depending on the GM, most non-combat trained animals cannot partcipate in combat and will flee when they are threatened in combat.

I think its a DM call thing in that, yes the creature probably does threaten. But with int 1 or 2 and probly not a natural urge to fight there's probably no way to know if it will take advantage of it or just cower or flee.

Yes. It would probably try to step on the goblin (effectively making a hoof attack)

A wild horse would run from any small, grinning humanoid nearby, ESPECIALLY if it looks threatening.

I wanted to add this:

Normal Docile Horse: Will Do Nothing (Not Flee or Attack) until SPOOKED... Either by being attacked or hearing sounds of Battle: So if a Goblin just walked up to it in first round of combat.. Horse will not Do Anything... although Goblins and Horses don't get along

War Trained Horse: ( Will Attack if commanded via Tricks Learned).. Will Not Run Away unless commanded or forced (i.e. Spells,ect).. and Probably would attack a Goblin since War Trained Horse lost his Docile Brother Horse long ago.

Wild Horse: (Would just run away from any Humanoid unless it was a Druid/Ranger doing their Animal Empathy
