It's a medium BAB class, so it can't have better BAB than a paladin, which is a full BAB class. Unless you just mean "attack bonus", in which case maybe the paladin isn't built very well or the magus is much more optimized that you are used to.
Paladins get heavy armor proficiency. Magi only start with light. The magus can, at level 13, start casting in heavy armor, but not right out of the box. So, at best, it can have the same armor as a paladin, but only late in its career.
Paladins get a good fort and will and add their charisma to their saves. Paladins almost always have great saves. The magus also gets a good fort and will, but gets no bonus to his saves. Your paladin might have not done something right.
The magus can use Spell Combat to full attack and cast a spell. This is their thing. It's like the paladin's lay on hands. However, the magus doesn't get a whole lot of spells per day, so they can burn through their spells really quickly if they use it every round. Since a magus is also a bit MAD (without specialized feats, he needs strength for attack and damage, dex for light armor defense, con for hit points as a melee fighter and int for spells).
There is a possibility that something is wrong with one build or the other. Either your build is very under-optomized compared to the magus, or the magus is over-optimized compared to your build (or possibly illegally built).
Can you post your paladin's build so we can maybe see what's going on?

OK good to know. I wasn't aware that the Ultimate books had base classes in them :(
Apparently the cheesefest of a player is seriously gamef#$ing this character.
somehow this thing has more HP (admittedly I did roll a lowly 3 Hp at 2nd), has a better Attack AND damage bonus, better saving throws, better AC and more skills than you can shake a stick at.

To do that, he need High str, high dex, high con, high wisdom, and high intelligence.
The magus class is fine, sounds like this player have either 18 + in all stats or is just fudging with his character. DM should take a look on it.
