Alternative Summoning is it out there?

Advice

I have always thought the summoning spells were limited to what you can summon. I thought it would be cool for a character to be able to create a book of summons. He would have to encounter the creature of course and the CR would determine where on the spell levels it is placed.

Also I once knew a player that had many languages and spoke to the creatures he summoned and had them do extra stuff like if it was fire he could tell it to burn through a door is was trying to get in. Basicly he could tell them to use their special attack/abilities for other uses. Is that accurate or was it bending/braking the rules?

This is within the rules as long as you have the necessary language to speak with the summoned creature (Ignan for a fire elemental, Celestial for an angel, whatever). As long as you can communicate, you can give the creatures more detailed orders.
