A Question about Certain Revelations (spoilers)...

Curse of the Crimson Throne

Hey gang,

I have a question for those familiar with the scenario...

I started my Curse of the Crimson Throne campaign yesterday, and something hit me mid-game... I was wondering when, exactly, does the Senechal of Castle Korvosa dissapear? When does he go missing, and when do the players know about this? Is there a specific place in the first or second books that reveal this at some point?

Thanks

Ultradan

I'm a little foggy on this as I finished this campaign about a month ago and I don't currently have my materials on me. I believe an assassination is attempted on the seneschal during the whole Eodred death riots, or at least thats when I had it happen. The seneschal then gets to Salvatore Scream referenced in Escape from Old Korvosa. At that point in the third book it explains what happens to him after he escapes the castle, badly wounded to Salvatore, who then when things get hot turns him over to the Arkona's. From what I can remember though most of this info is near the beginning of book 3. Good luck running your campaign, this was a fun one for me.

Neolandus disappears during the riots after the King's death. The Red Mantis assassins make a failed attempt on his life. He is wounded and poisoned and seeks refuge with his friend Salvator Scream, the crazy painter.

To the outside wolrd, he is a casualty of the chaos and riots, but his sudden disappearance might make him a perfect scapegoat for evil-doers who are looking for a false trail.

There is more about what happened to him in the third installment of the AP (p. 7 and p. 30).

I am DMing the finale of CoCT in a week or so and as a hint to a DM just starting this AP I highly suggest planting the seed of Neolandus' disapperance pretty early in the story. I use a Korvosan Newspaper I publish in game to drop this little tidbit, and my players always kept it in the back of their minds as they deliberated their actions, and it really paid off when they finally rescued him and for the subsequent events.

I had the head of the Sable Company hanging out with Cressidia early on in book one, and had the PCs overhear that Neolandus was presumed dead in the initial riots and how Marcus was handling it.

Knowing they didn't try to attach the PCs to Marcus very early, I tried to give him little cameos in my story, showing what he was doing to help, having him talk about Neolandus being a stand up guy, that sort of thing. They didn't really role play with him much though so they probably aren't going to be that broken up over the opener for Chapter 3.

If you could, I would maybe give Marcus a little more limelight, have him single-handedly take out a rampaging otyugh or something heroic like that. Build up that Neolandus taught him everything he knows, make the both of them look awesome so future events are more of a shock.

100% agree with this comment! An interesting gambit, and one I might use if I GM COCT again is to swap the Marcus and Kressida roles.
