It bypasses the damage reduction of most demons :)
Or did you mean something more descriptive? If so, I can't help you.

Items without metal parts cannot be made from cold iron. An arrow could be made of cold iron, but a quarterstaff could not.

Cost Weapons x2 normal. Add magic enhancement +2,000 gp.
Cost (Longer Wording) "Weapons made of cold iron cost twice as much to make as their normal counterparts. Also, adding any magical enhancements to a cold iron weapon increases its price by 2,000 gp. It's not so much that it does something as that it is something.
Just like having a +1 weapon will bypass DR/magic, having a cold iron weapon will bypass DR/cold iron.
Many demons just happen to have DR/cold iron.
There is no description. You just need to look at various Demon and Fey monster stat blocks and see how many have DR that is overcome by cold iron. :)

Well, cold iron isn't terribly expensive to have, is it? It's nice as a backup weapon or as your main if you can stomach the 2000 gp tax to enhance it and don't want adamantine. Getting a good aligned weapon is much more costly and difficult.
For a lot of weapons, it's adding like +15 or 20 gp to the cost, so getting a benefit just a few times makes it worthwhile. If you want get a dirt cheap weapon like dagger or sickle and make it cold iron as your backup weapon. Virtually neglibile cost.
Almost all demons (not devils) have DR/cold iron. From the Bestiary:
Babau: DR 10/cold iron or good
Balor: DR 15/cold iron and good
Dretch: DR 5/cold iron or good
Glabrezu: DR 10/good
Hezrou: DR 10/good
Marilith: DR 10/cold iron and good
Nabasu: DR 10/cold iron or good
Nalfeshnee: DR 10/good
Quasit: DR 5/cold iron or good
Shadow: DR 10/cold iron or good
Succubus: DR 10/cold iron or good
Vrock: DR 10/good
So: 4 of 12 demons only have DR/good. All the other demons have DR/cold iron, with good either an added requirement or a substitute requirement.
In most cases, a cold iron weapon is a cheaper alternative than a good-aligned weapon.

You can do evil outsider or lawful outsider bane (I suggest the former) but not devils specifically.
That is a +3 equivalent weapon w/ cold iron and masterwork so 18000 +300 +2000 = 20300 gp, plus 2x whatever the hell a normal longsword costs.

The masterwork cost is not doubled for cold iron.
Hm... It just says it costs twice as much to make. My interpretation would be that a non-masterwork cold iron longsword would cost 15x2=30gp, while a masterwork one would cost 315x2=630gp. Did I miss where it says the masterwork cost doesn't count when you double the price?

It would be cheaper to get one sword to use against ghosts, and another sword to use against demons.
The cold iron weapon wouldn't even need to be magical. A simple masterwork cold iron longsword does the job for only a few hundred gp :)
