Protecting scrolls

Advice

Silver Crusade

I touched on this in the scroll case capacity thread, but I figure it deserves its own thread. What happens to scrolls when the PC carrying them goes swimming?

The APG specifically says that scroll cases are not water resistant. Would a scroll case at least slow the water damage enough that the scrolls would be protected for a few minutes of swimming time, even if they would turn to mush after an hour?

Put your scrolls in a waterproof bag (Adventurer's Armory and/or Inner Sea Pirate Guide) or better, a Handy Haversack.

Silver Crusade

I was already thinking of the haversack, but the character will probably be level 4 before he has enough money and fame to get one.

It's pretty annoying that the other options are only listed in minor books that most people don't have. It's bad enough scroll cases are in the Core Rulebook, but I had to go to the Advanced Players Guide to get details on them.

While not explicitly RAW, common methods to protect paper (that easily works in the real world) should still work in the game. So, take your scroll case, a few straps of leather to bind the lid to the case securely, and cover the whole case in some kind of fat to keep the water out. And don't go swimming with it for more than like 10 minutes.

Dotting to see if anyone else has anything to add later....

As an aside, I'd like to throw Riffle Scrolls in for the 'how to protect' as well.

scrollcase inside a waterproof sack? or the box kind of scroll case...
