If i have a character who is a 1st level monk, and when he levels up to 2nd level he takes a level of paladin. Can i then at 3rd level, take a 2nd level of the monk class, and then at 4th level take a 2nd level of the paladin class?
In other words is the monk class, and the paladin class free to multi class?
thanks.

Yes, but they still have to follow all alignment restrictions of any class they take lvs in or lose the listed abilities of that class.
If such is stated somewhere in their class write up. Monks actually don't lose anything other than the ability to take another class level. Paladins do indeed suffer more of course. Barbarians lose the ability to rage if they become lawful but otherwise keep most their class abilities.

Yes, that is what I ment, sorry. They just lose whatever is listed in their class write up.

I think pathfinder removed the clause that stated monks and paladins could not return to their respective classes once they have multiclassed. - Gauss
