Chelish Crux *Spoilers*

Sczarni

I looked up the Chelish Crux and it has a hardness and hit points. My players can get a little...antsy/frustrated...what should I do if they try and smash it?

Grand Lodge

Have it do its fireball thing and blast them all. make it hurt. bad. a couple of those and they will probably stop.

PS: if you're feeling crafty, here's my Chelish crux handouts:

  • The Crux one|two|three|four|five|six|seven|eight|nine|ten|eleven|twelve

  • Sczarni

    The prob is that it says it explodes and everything inside is then vaporized...

    Also is there a post to explain the pics?

    Actually, the adventure reads "If forced open, the crux crumbles to ashes and any objects it contains appear on the ground at the site of the fiery burst."

    The objects inside are subject to the fiery blast, but not automatically destroyed. You can assume that the head would likely survive, as well as the silver box and maybe even the wands. The portfolio and the scrolls are almost definitely destroyed.

    Between the information that Ailyn has and the experiences of Khazrae, as well as some decent information gathering, it's possible that the party could piece together some of the information about the lost Pathfinders. They should, at least, be able to track down Ghaelfin and Coriana... which is a decent start.

    I think that the intent is that being impatient and forcing it open will allow the PCs to continue along the adventure path, while being clever and solving the puzzle will give them some additional rewards.

    Sczarni

    Gotcha. Okay I will do it that way.

    Does anyone have a pattern that would make the Crux more of a puzzle and less of a REALLY evil guessing game? I can't figure out a way to make the numbers significant enough to make this a puzzle rather than just having to guess the order A LOT.

    Grand Lodge

    Sure, sorry!

    Press the sides in order:

    Spoiler:

    1 = Unicorn (one horn)
    2 = Tiefling (two horns)
    3 = The Fates (3 of 'em)
    4 = Hellhound (4 legs)
    5 = Bone devil (4 appendages, one weapon)
    6 = Skull head (the 6 little squid legs)
    7 = Devil star (7 negative spaces)
    8 = Spider (8 legs)
    9 = Layers of Hell (9 layers)
    10 = Asmodeus ( 5 points, 5 lines)
    11 = Angel Wings ( each Wing is the number one)
    12 = Marilith (6 arms, 6 weapons)

    Sczarni

    Good call...so I have an hour to print and tape this together! Thanks!

    No prob, hope your party has fun with it, would love to hear how it went!

    Sczarni

    It actually went well. I went with the 1-12 suggestion, but they managed to get 8 wrong (they were guessing on which side was 9), so I did swap it and reverse the order to 12-1 just like the Crux should.

    They had fun with it and were very happy that it wasn't just an Int check or DD check. Although I just about raged when the wizard of the group made an Int check off the bat to solve it...luckily he failed or I'd have been pissed I spent an hour and a half making that.

    The hand out made this puzzle a great one!

    Yeah, for puzzles like this, I let the int checks earn them little clues, because insta-solve-with-skill-check takes the fun out o' things.
