Spell Perfection Confusion with Metamagics

Rules Questions

My question is probably really obvious to everyone but me, but if you take Spell Perfection with a 7th level spell say Delay Blast Fireball and than you put Maximize and Empower spell on. Would you be able to get the maximize for free and the Empower would only raise it up 2 levels up to a 9th level spell.

Yes, Spell Perfection lets you apply one metamagic feat you have to that spell without affecting its level or casting time.

An empowered spell uses up a spell slot two levels higher than the spell's actual level.

If you've taken Spell Perfection (delayed blast fireball) you could apply maximize and empower by casting it as a 9th level spell. (with appropriate casting time, if spontaneous)

The modified level can't go above 9, adding maximize, a +3 adjustment, to DBF, a level 7 spell, can not be done with Spell Perfection. I think you could add Empower to it for free and then pay for any other +1 or +2 metamagic feat on it and cast in an 8th or 9th level slot, depending, however.

I would interpret that "as long as the total modified level of the spell does not use a spell slot above 9th level" means you can't apply +3 level feat (Maximize Spell) to 7th level spell because it would push past the 9th level cap. Otherwise nothing would stop Quickened time stops.
Check with your GM how he looks on this combination.

No, unless you also had magical lineage Delayed blast fireball.

You can not Maximize Delayed blast fireball because that comes to 10th level and the free one can not bring it above 9th level.

If you had Magical Lineage for it (since you can apply them in any order) you could Maximize +3 (-1) Lineage to 9, spell perfection would then bring it down to 7, and then empower at 9.

I find it works best with 5th level spells (or 6th if you use magical lineage) this way you get free Quicken.

I cast Mage Armor and apply Still Spell.

What is the total modified level of the spell? 2.

Now lets say I use Spell Perfection (Magic Missile) to apply Still Spell.

What is the total modified level of the spell? 1 or 2?

I think it's 1, because Spell Perfection does not increase it's level.

You folks are saying the intent is "as long as the total modified level of the spell would not have otherwise used a spell slot above 9th level" ?

Yes. Because otherwise the limitation I quoted would be meaningless: no one gets 10th+ level spell slots so no one can cast spell with adjusted spell level of 10th+ anyway.

I guess it makes more sense that way. I figured it had something to do with Heighten Spell.

it looks like alot of people are misunderstanding what I am saying I'm saying

Spell Perfection (Delay Blast Fireball), which gives me a free metamagic which is Maximize spell which would still be a 7th level spell and than adding Empower on top for a +2 modified level making the Maximize Empower Delay Blast Fireball a level 9 spell.

The popular (and reasonable) interpretation of Spell Perfection is that it will not function if the adjusted level of the spell would normally be greater than 9th.

Meaning, if you could not apply that metamagic feat to that spell without spell perfection, then you can't do it with spell perfection.

I understand you perfectly - I am saying that some GMs perceive the RAI behind the limitation I told that you could not add Maximize Spell to delayed blast fireball, even if it is not increasing actual spell slot. That's why I said: check with your GM how he interpret this.
